Large Scale Central

Hell on Wheels American

I just started season 3. I am very unhappy that Swede killed Lily. But back to trains. They seem to be using the coal burner a bit more at the end of season two and now for the opener of season three it starts out with the coal burner. I like this as it is more closely resembling the 119. But I did notice one thing, the tenders never have fuel in them. No wood or coal that I have noticed. Maybe once I saw a little wood but for the most part they are always void of fuel. In one shot it appears as if the tender is actually more or less like a gondola doesn’t even have a tank.

I am watching on netflix not sure how far they take the series. I need to check"on demand" as well so I can get caught up. And the wife and kids leave for a week so by weeks end I should be caught up.

Netflix will take you through the end of season 4. Season 5 started 2 weeks ago. You should still be able to get both of those on-demand or at AMC’s website. I’d record them if you can so you don’t miss them. It will be over a year before Netflix gets the final season 5.

So who’s giving away plot (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)There might still be folks looking at Season 1 or 2!

Devon, I haven’t seen the series, but to me having full tenders means the locomotive hasn’t started the day’s work yet. A locomotive out doing its job, should have a partly emptied tender.

No I don’t mean partially full. I mean nothing zero nada zilch, empty.

Well thay made a liar out of me just seen the coal burner full of wood. . . geez I am picky

The loco in question is based on the ‘General’ as it is in its preserved state in GA today, but with all the ugly bolts and things added. You can see the cab design, smokebox and cylinder design is all from the General. This is the rebuilt, late 1860s version of the General. so they did aim for something.

David.

Yeah I can see that. Same sand dome and cab same stack I can see it.

I thought the show was too violent for me. When they cut a guys head off I quit!

Jerry,

I agree with you it is more violent than necessary. If I was any less interested in the story line I wouldn’t watch it for that reason. But the stupid story line sucked me in deep enough to look past it. It is to graphic in my opinion.

well, Devon, don’t be a party pooper.

i just finished the first of season 2.

btw… i noticed, that the sleepers are spaced very far apart.(for a northamerican RR)

I don’t know if that is true to history or not, but it would make sense since they were being subsidized by the mile that they lay track as quickly and cheaply as possible. They probably figured out about how far they could span with rail and loading of the day and kept just short of the theoretical maximum distance between ties. Cheaper and faster.

Yes sorry. I won’t give anymore away. I hate when people do it to me and then I go and do it.

Yeah, the violent nature and early lack of any form of realism to the set led me to shy away from the show. That said, if you study history at all, that was a violent time. The railroads were expanding and any thing that got in the way either got moved or mowed down, and that included people. No different than the range wars. Recently, I believe it was along the NS right of way, they discovered a mass grave. Forensics indicate lots of broken bones and such, hard to believe it was an epidemic of disease as was suggested.

Yes Star Wars is FICTION

I refuse to live in a universe where Jar Jar was real

I always thought you were a bit strange. Now, I know why. Whoo Hoo started season 5

I am starting to watch this. Wife even likes it!

It is a good show but in later seasons it kind of gets away from the RR and more into the characters. It is like a soap opera with the trains as background. Some of the characters are real and some are fictional but that is OK to keep it interesting.

My wife and I both watch it though I think she is more interested in that handsome dashing Cullen Bohannon than she is the trains but then again I am a big fan of Eva. She is one strong frontier woman and easy on the eyes.

I’m waiting for the day when Bohannon gives that murdering scheming Swede his cum uppence. I never forgave him for killing the “fair haired maiden of the west”

She tolerates the show - it’s Anson Mount they all want to watch (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

I’ve followed the show from the beginning. I like the main character’s personality. I’m sure there is as much fact as there is fiction, in the story. I think the trains are a good representation of the real thing. If you think back to the fifties and sixties, when westerns were popular, the characters then were probably as far from the truth as one could get. Don’t forget the studios had to cater to contemporary hair styles and behavior.
