"Heidi" or how RhB 11 got its nickname

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBGzOrs2p5g&NR=1

Fast forward to about 8:45.

I had been looking for this for a while now, happy that I found it!

I could have told you that.

I knew it was in the movie, just wanted to find the movie (for its cameo).

There was a film made from the HEIDI Novel written by Hanna Spyri, in the 1950ies. The loco and the coaches used in the Film at the moment Heidi has to leave the swiss mountains to move to the Family of Dr.Sesemann at Frankfurt are the classic RhB steamdriven lineup. Since that day it was called the “Heidi - Train” and the loco was named “Heidi” That´s the secret of the RhB steam loco with a Girls name instead of the name of a town along the line as usual. Maybe Hansjoerg Mueller can verify that !

There have so far been 10 film versions of “Heidi” - based on Johanna Spyri’s novel. The first Swiss version in 1952 is the one in which #11 pulls the train which carries Heidi away from her mountains. The name “Heidi” was at that time painted on the smokebox door and remained there until at least 1977 when the engine was sold to a modelrailway club near Interlaken. When the engine was readied to return to the RhB the “Heidi” moniker was no longer in evidence.

PS. Did I mention the #11 has been added to the RhB layout Grischun roster? Just couldn’t resist after my friend Keith showed up last summer with his nicely decked out “Heidi”. Check out the video of the occasion

To my eye-trumpet, the LGB ‘Heidi’ is by far the best-looking of all the LGB near-replicas of famous European locos. If I had the slightest chance to get ahold of one at a realistic price I would leap at it. I have six of the RhB cars already…

H-J - Next time you see Keith, tell him ‘hi’ from us - we had a great day over at his place on the island a few years back and have never forgotten it.

Wow , what a great video , the reverberations of sound in different areas , and the layout is looking good , at the 6:40 mark the sunlight and shadow of the smoke and train shadows to the right …nice effect .
Who could watch that video and not want the HEIDI locomotive , sorry that I missed that one for sure .
Thanks for shareing the joy .

HJ, did you ever get a review of the new M/LGB version together? Interested from a pre-post Marklin view.

Don’t forget the Heidi Bowl!

For those who are going…huh?, the following is submitted: The Heidi Bowl refers to an infamous NFL football game which was televised on NBC, November 17, 1968, between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. A close game towards the end, the Jets had kicked a field goal to take the lead 32-29 with 65 seconds left to play before it was abruptly cut off at 7:00 pm EST so NBC could broadcast a regularly-scheduled television film adaption of the classic children’s tale Heidi. The result was thousands of angry callers flooding NBC’s switchboard to the point of breakdown; by the time executives realized their mistake and resumed broadcasting the game, the Raiders had scored two touchdowns within nine seconds to take a 43-32 lead, and ultimately the win.

Embarrassed, NBC and NFL executives made a rule dictating that no televised games would be interrupted by regular programming until after the completion of the game.

I was watching that game, too.

…and messed up TV schedules for everyone else who could give a flip about football, basketball, etc.

Iconoclast!

Maybe true to some. Still, the Heidi bit is a bit funny! College ball I like, but never understood the infatuation with pro sports.

One day, I would love to see “who wants to be in ths silly reality show” pre-empted because Masterpiece Theatre, the US Spelling Bee, or a Dog Show ran long.
