Heat's in the house

We like to brag that the ocean breeze in our SoCal beach town keeps us cool, even on the hottest day. Sure, yesterday was pretty darn hot, but today has to be a record–96 degrees. I’ll try to remember that in December.

Are you inside or outside of the fog line?

Inside most of the time (we call it “June Gloom,” “May Gray,” and “Foggest August,” which sounds like a great idea. We’re four blocks inland (a half-mile) from the beach. Earlier today, I started my “Fix up the garage for your classic car,” project, opening bins of old bedhseets (drop cloths) and towels (for car wiping, of course), but the garage is sweltering too. There’s a suggestion of a breeze now that the sun is setting, but it’s gonna be another, minimal clothes and no bed covering nights. Reminds me of Buffalo in the summer. Or the midwest.

I know, you guys in Washington are feeling pretty smug right about now, 'cause it’s prolly raining. Two of my best friends now live on Bainbridge and have promised to FedEx us some cooler weather.

Joe, I lived for twelve years right on the fog line in Sandy Eggo County, while I was in the Navy, so I am well acquainted with schizoid weather. Now, I live at 2650 feet in Eastern Washington, where we have a different kind of weirdness. We are expecting low 40’s tonight, and mid 90’s tomorrow.

Joe- Buffalo didn’t get the sweltering summer that we deserved this year. Especially after that horrible winter we suffered through. So, if you get a chance, send some of that weather back east here to your old stomping grounds. It’s only September and it’s already getting unseasonably cold here. Keep your parkas ready, it’s gonna be another nasty winter in the nickel city!

I think winter will be early. Already had upper 30’s yesterday morning.

Been running the heater here in Nebraska.

It aint all peachy Joe, been over 100 here since saturday, doesnt drop below 80 at night, was 101 yesterday and 85 last night, trying to sleep sucks when it gets this hot, had enough of this summer.

I’ll really be glad when this heat wave has passed! Yesterday it got to 98 here, with moderately high humidity. Then we got a very brief thundershower that didn’t cool things down much but did boost the humidity even higher. The nights are worst because even though the temp outside goes down to about 79 or 80, inside the house it stays in the upper to mid 80s long past midnight. Was drenched in sweat all night.

So far today has been slightly better, it only got up to 96 at noon then dropped three degrees by 1pm.

At least when I’m out camping in the desert, it’s a dry heat.

Ray, I can usually during the summer rely on being able to open the windows at night at let it cool down a bit inside overnight, usually down to 75-78 or so. Not this spell though, last 3 nights have been at 85 outside all night long, our thermostat for the AC is set at 80, so opening the windows doesn’t help this go around.

Grrr! I’m starting to get pretty annoyed. The ocean breeze comes up about 9 a.m. and ya think, “OK, here we go!” Then the sun cranks up, the breeze can’t handle the heat, and before long we’re almost back where we left off. Today is marginally cooler (maybe three of four degrees), but it’s still hot and sticky. The garage, which I’m attempting to pretty up so it don’t look like a picker’s paradise (Hey, that’s a great name for a reality TV show! In fact, my wife’s uncle up in Auburn, CA, could be the first guest). Need to cut stuff up with my saws-all, etc, but the garage is an oven. Went to the supermarket with my wife, just to cool off. She shopped, while I collared all the help to bitch about how much I hate Safeway. They were glad to help us to our car. Ray’s right: the house gets so hot that by the time it cools down, the heat cycle starts all over again. BTW, Ray, we did not get the thundershowers you guys and Lake Elsinore, where it flooded, did. Ya suppose any of that water refreshed the water table? Dieseldude, my cuz in Clarence already had the furnace on, so winter she’s a comin’. Maybe I should stop whining about the heat.

It’s finally starting to cool down some. Right now (4pm) it’s 86 degrees, which is 10 degrees less than it was at this time yesterday. Humidity is up near 50% so it still feels pretty sticky but still a darn sight better than what we had yesterday.

At our place we only got a tenth of an inch of rain yesterday, just enough to drive up the humidity. But east of us, some places got flooded. Apparently there were some pretty high winds too because a lot of trees were blown down.

I dunno, round here its in the 70s during the day. That’s not too bad for me, walking around Pittsburgh, dragging a hand truck loaded with tools and copier parts. The thing I don’t like, is its dark and chilly by the time I get home, change, eat, feed the dog and relax a bit. Now I guess I will be playing trains on the weekends

Quite cool here too. Fortunately I get home between 5 and 5:30 most days, so still time to get a few chores done.

Looked outside yesterday and couldn’t see the weather because of fog .

Looked outside last night and it was too dark to see the weather .

Perhaps it’s best I don’t know , what do you think ?

Mike

Mike, ah, um, well…

could be.

Yea! The marine layer is back and so is the ocean breeze. Today (Thursday) was just right and the forecast is good for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, there’s another tropcal storm forming off Baja, so we may get more of what we just had. Meanwhile, while California is burning, Arizona, Texas and other states are under water. So I wana know, if we can build a pipeline to carry oil from Canada to Houston, why can’t we build one to divert some of that extra water from the southwest to Cali? Not wanting to start a political discussion. Just askin…

Well Joe, since you are “just asking” the answer is YES WE CAN (without being “political”).

Well then we should, Joseph!

Joe,

I agree!
