Heat Wave

Today is our third day over 90 with high humidity. Very unusual for this time of year in Southern New England. It probably won’t qualify as an official heat wave as we are supposed to get some relief tonight, but it sure does at my house. I discovered on Saturday that the living room window A/C unit quit. Bummer.

I actually braved the heat last evening to do some gardening for a few hours. Most of my gardens are shady and even though the wind is damp and hot, there was a slight breeze. The Rust Garden has expanded and sports several new artifacts found along local ROWs. I’ll update my post in Gardening with some new pictures as soon as I get them, and some time on the home computer :o

They’re not promising us tornados today. Seems a great relief.

We had a few very localized tornados last week, and today if the fourth or fifth day of temps. in the very high 90s in the Wash. DC area

Plus behind our house they are demolishing a school building and building a new one. There’s a really remarkable machine back there that crushes concrete debris and sorts it into four piles. Lot’s of dust and noise, heat index of 105–

Not running trains much

Yea, we’re into our 3rd day of the heat wave here in PA. Had to mow the lawn last nite and 3/4 of the way done the drive belt on the tractor busted. So needless to say I had to use a push mower to finish up this mornin.

The plants around the house and the RR seem to be surviving. There were a few stressed out by the heat but a shot from the garden hose fixed that. Gotta mosey around and see what they look like today.

Seems like a good time to stay in the shop and putter…

I think the high today will be 48.
Been raining all day so far (wipers needed), supposed to have gotten a foot of snow in the mountains last night.

Around these parts, we call it “algore spring”.

I think this year we have watered the plants 2 or 3 times, period.

Snowed in parts of Spokane this morning.
Wind chill of 27 degrees.

Featherkile prolly has a foot of it!

Several days of 90F temps and high humidity are supposed to break tonight. Judging by the angry clouds to the west, it'll break hard.

We have been in the high 90’s since Friday.I’ve been hearing thunder for over 2 hours now,but no rain yet.
Ralph

Hot here - high 90’s the last 3 days. Had a big storm come through last Wednesday - no power until early Friday morning. I’m REALLY glad we have power now.

Yup, it snowed here in beautiful downtown Deer Park. Not a foot, but tnough to make a mess. What is the date today?

Snow? In JUNE?!! Good grief!

It was a sad day when I lost my Arlo Guthrie LP.

Wow I had no idea it’s still that cold there . I was out finishing digging the pond redo finally, hit 3 Ft thats enough ! 91 Out I just soak my shirt with the hose to stay cool.

The front moved through last nite. Whole lotta noise and a nice lite show, but not much rain. However the temps have dropped about 20-30 degrees. It’s now a comfortable 65 instead of mid to upper 80’s during the nite and should be in the low to mid 80’s during the day with little humidity. Turned the A/C off and opened the windows. It’s turning out to be a very pleasant day…

Temps in the Midwest are about seasonal, usually high 80’s and approaching 90 degrees at the heat of the day. Unusually clear skies right now and the sun is quite strong. We still have a lot of water and it is expected to crest today at the lake at the level of the floor of the basement below the office. Second time we have evacuated out of it this Spring. Up until this last weekend, we have had a considerable amount of storms roll through, we now seem to be settling into a more standard summer weather pattern. Right now it sure feels like the weather patterns we had in 1993, when the rivers around here got extremely high. Floods are bad, but droughts are certainly worse. The early morning and late evening are beautiful. The extra water has caused the vegetation on the railroad to go crazy, keeping the right of way open is a challenge, but not unmanageable. Projects going strong in the basement as the track plan is being layed on the new “Timesaver”.

Same front came through here about 9 last night. They got some pretty heavy weather North and South of us, but just lots of noise and a bit of rain over us. Definitely cooler this morning.

Outdoor gardening continued despite the heat last evening. Trying to pick up some red mulch that I dislike without killing any of Marilyn’s annuals. I ended up with a garbage can full of mulch/leaves/soil that I can hardly move. Not sure how I’m going to dispose of that. Maybe as fill somewhere.

Ric - Roundup in a tank car with spray arms

Marilyn panics whenever she sees Roundup in my hands. She has a garden on one side of the driveway and the weeds grow between the border and the pavement. I tend to get aggressive with the spray and it sometimes tinges some of her plants. Doesn’t make her too happy.

I have way too many outdoor projects started. Need to finish something so the cooler weather (80’s) this weekend will help.

We’re back to more seasonal weather now. The belt for the lawn tractor arrived this morning. Gettin that fixed will be a chore…

I had the same problem on my ROW. A few places where the track was completly covered. Had to get out the shears and hack a path through the vegetation.

I picked up a gallon of heavy duty Round-Up a few weeks ago at my son’s place. I don’t use it on too many spots on the layout. Just some places where the weeds poke through.

So I finally get a free weekend. Wife and kid out of town. Time to work on the layout. And it’s over 100 all weekend. Then the blower motor on the A/C dies.

So much for working on the layout. :frowning:

On one 100 degree day, the boys were fussing a little. I told them, “When it’s this hot, there are only 2 proper places to be. In the air conditioning or in the water.”

They opted for the water.
