Heard from our French/Canadian Friends

A lot of us were concerned about Gaetan and Nicole at this last year’s Invasion. No one had heard anything. For those interested we got a Christmas Card from them. We sent it to their old address and received the card with a simple signature on a card saying Season’s Greetings in many languages and no return address. I don’t think it was us, so who pissed them off? It is tough to loose good friends for those of us who never have enough. Just wanted to pass it on, they are alive.

Thanks for the Info… Jane and I have been wondering…

Hope John LeForestier & Family are OK. Heard on the news parts of Toronto are without electricity. Got the Christmas package, and have not heard from them. We pray all is OK.

Thanks for the news about our Canadian friends Gaeten and Nicole, hosts and organizers for our wonderful extension for the 2007 Montreal version of the Invasion.

We have family in Montreal and things there seemed to be OK for electricity. Don’t know about Toronto though.

Unfortunately the museum in G scale had it’s last Public run on the first Monday of this month.

It’s up for sale as of Jan 1st.

Doug has telephoned and e-mailed them, but got no response.

I got off my butt at Midnight on Boxing Day, and called those friends in Montreal…

I got Geetan, in bed…and told him, that his friends in Canada, and worldwide were worried about him and Nicole…He may send a note…but he seemed to be alive…

I sent him and Nicole a ‘Joyeux Noel’ greeting by phone again this year and got ‘no available connection’. I didn’t think to tell anybody here since this is all the response I ever get when I call his number.

I also got a card from them; yesterday as a matter of fact.

It’s nice to know they haven’t disappeared!

I appreciated receiving a card from them yesterday…

While updating the new OVGRS web site I came across a picture of Gaetan and Nicole.

For us the scene was like this: From 9:00PM Dec 21 to 2:00PM Dec 25 we were out of power, heat, internet, 'phone. Very cold conditions. We had the gas BBQ only, used it to make coffee, eggs, soup… Concerned about pipes freezing. Bought a thermometer to monitor temp in house, also antifreeze for the drains. Slept under covers 4 nights, woke up Christmas morning to a temp of 33 degrees in the house and temp still dropping indoors.

In that big comfy bed with my fabulous wife Noelle was the warmest place in the house. Getting out of it in the morning, not so great!

Dumped antifreeze into the drains and washer pumps and split for the kids’ house out of town for 24 hours as we had planned to spend Christmas with them, stayed over to Boxing Day. Utility trucks had been on our street at last as we left, power on when we returned.

Eight days in and there are still folks around here without power, God love 'em. Cases where the power to individual homes is still cut by downed trees and ice on cables, so these places are getting fixed one at a time.

We count our blessings, and thank you folks for your concern.

Planning now for the build challenge, the ECLSTS, and all the good things to come in 2014!Cheers everyone!

Don’t blame me!

John - That certainly does not sound like fun. We’ve lived through it, two years in a row, but we have a generator that will run our oil furnace so it never got cold. I couldn’t handle those indoor temps. It would be off to the shelter for me.

John I was surprised you don’t have a wood stove up in those parts. Like Jon experienced very long stretches with no power and no gas. My wood stove kept us comfy and the generator gave us running water and electric. Glad you made out ok.

I’m glad your pipes didn’t freeze, that would have been a real mess!

Had it almost that bad here a couple years ago. Our furnace blew up and it took nearly two weeks to get it replaced, during which we were having a cold spell with nights getting down into the low 30s and upper 20s. At least we still had power and could run a little electric space heater, but it still got incredibly cold in the house at night.
