I agree with that 100%. And that includes immigrants.
dave, wasn’t the guy who said that shot in the head for thinking that?
So…uh…mark…um…what are you trying to say?
Even though I’m a Viet Vet (two tours) I avoid the Vet Hospital like the plague. (In fact, never been there, thanx to the absolutely lousy treatment my Dad (WW2) received there.)
I’ll keep my family doctor, thank you.

That’s why it’s really another welfare program rather than a benefit. Those that can go elsewhere, do.
Steve Featherkile said:Only country that I know that does that is Mexico - everyone serves the military except those that are chosen in a lottery. - After that their jobless and run to this country!
I'll take it a step further, if'n y'all don't mind. I think that someone should be a veteren of some sort of public service before (s)he can vote or run for office. Put another way, being a Vet should be the basic requirement for full citizenship.
Why should we force our people to serve the military agenda of the polititicains??? that’s all the military does now. Iraq was never a treat to the US nor was Afganistan as a COUNTRY, the religious radicals in that country are the enemy, and you can’t win a war of ideals or beliefs with bombs and bullets. The more you kill, the more you propagate.
I would gladly fight the enemy of the US if the US is invaded, however, I would never fight in something like Iraq.
Mark, I don’t think either Steve or I said serve in the Military only. I think it was military or civil service.
I would dare say that if our politician’s children were in the service, they would be far more careful where the military was sent.
Or if our politicians themselves were veterans. My point exactly.
Only those who have served in some capacity can earn full citizenship.

Warren Mumpower said:You blokes have put to rest any illusions I had that the American VA hospital system is something special. Based on what you've said so far, Warren, I'll take "can" to mean "can afford to".

Anyone else watch “The News Hour”, the long-running American public TV current affairs program? We get it in Oz a day after it’s shown in the US, and I try to watch at least part of it every night.
Today there was a segment on ex-servicemen’s education benefits. What a revelation! After WWII, veterans were well looked after. Today? Check out http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/military/jan-june08/gibill_02-12.html, especially the interview with Chris Mettler.
