Hay bales??

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make 1/24 scale hay bales, the smaller rectangular type, not the large round ones? Does anyone sell them?

Jim

Hi, Jim. A couple of years ago, Boomer Sent me some. they are just the right size. He said he got them from a wedding he attended. they where part of the table decorations. So maybe you can check out party favors.

No doubt you’ll find them here, along with a bunch of other stuff you can’t do without.

Simply Google “wedding favors hay bales”, and you will be amazed at what you get.

Thanks, who would have thought, wedding favors! Boomer is almost my neighbor too.

Hey, Jim, tell Boomer we said hi, and that we miss him.

Tractor supply sometimes has plastic toy hay bales, I bought a bunch and painted them, look pretty good in my hay bale shed on the farm

google or search in ebay for “carrera” (that is an 1:32 car racing system) and “hay” or in german “Heu”.

you should find bales 1 1/4" long, 3/4" wide and 5/8" high made from plastik.

YES!

I knew I had seen them before and when you mentioned Tractor Supply I remembered seeing them while looking at the 1:32 New Ray trucks. Actually this is a great deal because you get the bales, truck, forklift and skids

And yes, we miss Boomer.

What Tom said.

From Mike Morgan... Take wooden blocks, cut to size for scale, coat with PVA ( Elmer's) glue, dust with dry sawdust, and you have more realistic hay bales than anything plastic or resin.

I wonder if one was to use Titebond III instead of Elmer’s glue, if it would hold up outside?? What say you Mike? Oh I forgot, he can’t post.

Yeah, I think you’re right, TB3 would be a better choice. Not perfect, as it will eventually fail, but much better. Maybe a slow cure epoxy?

Since the saw dust isn’t sealed, it would eventually fail in the weather. Sealing would probably ruin the look. But, since its just glue and saw dust, it could be re-caoted quickly when needed.

The craft store Michaels sells perfectly sized hay bales. They come in a two pack bag. I think they call them Ashland Straw Bales. Just be sure to get the smallest size, as they come in various sizes.

They last about a season outdoors exposed to the elements. They are wrapped with two thin metal strips. These eventually rust.

Here’s a pic that shows two bales (see the large image link for better closeup detail)
