Hartland 4-4-0

Guys,
Anyone have a review on the Hartland 4-4-0?
I might pick one up. It will be converted to Bat/RC if I do, so power pickup isn’t an issue.
I’m wundrin about performance and reliability.

Thanks,
jb

I’ve heard they’re a robust little engine, I don’t have one so I’m not speaking from experience. Haven’t heard any bum reviews on their engine blocks, though that’s not saying some people may have had issues.

Ken,
I’m wundrin if the front pilot stays on the rails.
Unlike the big haulers which spend most of their time off.

Haven’t heard any complaints about pilot truck and it’s been around for quite awhile. I don’t think you’d go wrong if you bought one. I’ve never gotten one only because of their toy-like appearance and their size.

I’ll be a rivet counter for a monemt, but are they not 1:24 and therfore quite small? However on some of the early short lines they had small locos and short cars and trains. Good luck with R/C install.

I have one, actually my daughters. RCS fits no problem. The pilot truck does come off occasionally, never looked into it. Brushes went bad in the motor, early. They sent me a new motor for free. Haven’t had anymore problems. Size wise they look good with the early Bachman cars.

My first LS loco over 10 years ago , still runs , rugged and well built , not a detailed scale locomotive . Thought the stock pony wheels too small, …fitted / filed , worried , and placed Bachmann 4-6-0 pony wheels in the HLW truck block , works fine , looks better to me . Have you considered a Bachmann 4-4-0 ? They are beautiful and would look so good on your new outdoor railroad , and in the photos that you will be takeing there . HLW

I like the HLW and Bachmann…know where you may find a deal on the latter…lemmie know if you are interested!

Dear Dennis,

Your last shot is “Ken Patterson” like. Wow, is it 1:1? On the third look, I finally found ‘details’ that show it’s a model.

If you photo-shopped some “heat distortion” above the stack and rust on the rails, you would have a near perfect illusion.

Gorgeous loco, by the way.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Thank you Joe . I have never PS any pics , all I know to do is crop , and resize . I have a good place for photos , if taken a certain direction .

Bear in mind the Bachmann requires a wider diameter 6.5 ’ dia curve, while the HLW can run on 4’ dia curvature, something to consider given no track description was given by the OP.

Those are nice pics!

Yes, but we’ve seen photos of John’s construction. Nice sweeping curves IIRC.
