Hard Times, the model

Everybody who knows me knows that I absolutely adore mini scenes that tell a story. While looking for something else, I came across this picture. – I’d seen it before, but this time it made me stop dead with my muse screaming “BUILD ME!!” in my head.

The original was taken during an oil bust in the 1860’s. I had to change things around a bit to make use of stuff that I had on hand, but the essential elements remain the same.

Tangents are fun…

Very nice, and a cool prototype… Was it used to power a drill?

A skid engine like that could have been used to power just about anything. A sawmill, a thresher, and yes, a drill rig or pumping ‘power’.

I’m trying to decide whether to make a Star portable drill rig to go with it, or the charred stubs and twisted metal of a burned out wooden derrick, or just leave it by itself.

Mmmm… I like the picture in my head I get from…

Very nice diorama. Is that cabin a kit you customized or did you find a source for notched logs?

The cabin is a birdhouse that’s on sale at Michael’s this week for $3.99…
