I purchased a set of six Hammond Newqida HSB coaches. In an aborted attempt to overcoat and protect the cream painted finish, my clear overspray decided to be very difficult. It ‘pooled’ on the surface, much as it does with some of thew Bachmann painted surfaces. Not to be undone, I sanded the clear spray and factory finish and repainted my favourite coach colour (green). Using some excellent generic European decals, courtesy of Stan Cedarleaf, I finished the car as a ‘DB’ (Deutsche Bundesbahn) car. The decals are generic and in no way accurate for the car depicted. I was simply after the atmosphere. Also, having some spare decals and a LGB #3060B yellow Barmer coach, I repainted this to represent a “DR” (Deutsche Reichbahn) car. I now have three more LGB cars to repaint, plus numerous ‘factory second’ Hammond cars that will find a new lease on life as green “DB” and “DR” repaints.
Tim can you share what material and technique you used on the roof of the newqida car?
Mike,
Hammonds have released several new variations with both ‘DR’ and ‘HSB’ roadnames. Along with the new cars is the new high arched roof and more robust end rails. Thus, roof is a stock Hammond/Newqida moulding.
I too picked up a half-dozen of the “factory seconds” for repaint…Could not pass up the price! Of course even before painting I have invested $35.00 into each as I replaced the truck side frames and hook & loops with LGB DB truck parts and SanVal wheels. They look and roll so much better! I got a screaming deal on the DB trucks. Wheels really don’t count as I replace all my wheels with SanVal anyway. All told I should still be under $60.00/car.
Like the re-decal Tim…Have not decided if I will just re-paint the upper ‘cream’ surface or the entire coach. I also understand these are completely non-proto (don’t care) but I bought them to run behind my green Croc. See to most of us in America, if it looks Euro, it is!
Mark,
I picked some seconds just to use the roof, underframe and end rails. I looked at the price of the LGB ‘DB’ trucks (around $15 a pair), but stock is generally low at dealers on these (definately would look better). I need to paint the upper section of my red ‘DR’ cars to be more prototypical. I have no idea as yet as to the paint condition, but I intend on some cars to paint green and then decal as per above sample. Hardest part is sanding off the factory cream paint.
I believe that these rebuilt cars were 760 mm gauge, not the metre gauge the RhB Krok runs on. You are right though, if it looks European then it looks just fine. I am selling off my original Newqida 'TB' cars to fund more of the latest type. This will then give me a few green 'DB' cars, green 'DR' cars, Rugen style green 'DR' cars, some red/cream 'DR' cars and a set of red/cream 'HSB' cars. I even purchased a red LGB #31710 'DR' combine to run with the HSB and DR sets.
