Cliff what type of material did you use to print your windows?

Dennis

Dennis, one oddball window was printed on the 3d printer, with PLA. All the others are resin castings, from molds using Shapeways-printed SLS masters.

oh wow I thought you printed all your windows

Dennis

Yeah, I’d have been tempted to do so nowadays, but I made the windows / doors about 4 years ago when I took my first shot at the building. It would take a long time to print them (maybe 20-25 mins each), but no molds or casting or vacuum chamber involved.

Thanks Chris, haha!!

This weekend was mainly getting misc parts done to complete the detailing of the main structure, such as the remaining pieces for the platforms and all the vents. Here’s the latter, with the round purchased ones on the left and the 3d printed ones on the right. (These will be forever known as the David Maynard Memorial Vents (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)).

Also got the sign parts cut. I wanted something more foolproof, painting-wise, than my hand-painted 3d printed sign on the earlier test building. But, I wanted it to still have depth to it. So this sign is in layers: a .03 blank back panel, a .03 indexing panel with the letters cut out, a 1/8" outer frame, and 1/8" letters.

The letters are black, all else is faded white. In between shooting paint on those parts, I started fitting up the platforms. I had to re-work a few pieces, due to an improved design perspective once I observed how things were fitting up. OK Chris, I’ll admit it, that’s a fancy way of saying I totally hosed the design on a certain area, and those parts needed recutting. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Even started figuring out how to assemble / paint / assemble / mask / paint the buggers. The first step is bonding the “timbers” to the upper deck parts. The paper is removed from the lower (but not upper) surfaces of said deck parts, and they will be painted as a unit with the timbers (without the base pieces).

Last thing for today was assembling the sign, and getting it and a vent in place.

That’s about it for this weekend. Thanks for viewing!

Death has many forums

Physically

Mentally

Post respondly

It’s all about what one hears beyond the grave

Physically, I can feel a heartbeat, so I am alive on that score.

Mentally, well… We don’t have time to explore that twisted path.

Post Respondently, I am sure someone has killed me there.

All in all, its nice to be remembered.

Left, right…whatever; it does look very good. (And it’s nice to know David is still alive.)

Are you going to light this Cliffy?

Thanks Bruce, I can never keep those straight… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)I’m think I’m in the “Mentally” category on Rooster’s list.

And David M., ooops, didn’t mean it that way, haha! I only meant that every time I look at these vent things I think of you for some reason. Hey Chris, yep, that’s the intent. I’ll be installing that soon, as part of getting the main structure done.

Cliff us dyslexic folks have an issue telling our left from our right.

If you want to light it, you will have to put something, like a plenum, around the vents so they don’t emit light. Unless having them leak a little light doesn’t bother you.

Roger that, my dyxlesia seems to be progressing…

Well David, I’ll have to consider that extra fact. And if I can’t solve it, you will have on my layout an official “Inappropriate Large Scale Light Vent Emission” in your honor.

Somehow that seems most appropriate…

Light the buildings only on the outsides unless you have finished interiors that you can see into and if you do, close those areas off with “ceilings and walls” so the light doesn’t broadcast anywhere but out the windows.

At least that is what I would do(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Love your build log!!!

Rick

Haha John! And David M., thanks for understanding my ribbing you about those vents. I’m not positive if they will help, but it’s nice to be sure.

Hi Rick, thanks for following this thing! No, I won’t have finished interiors. What I want is some sort of “warm glow” for each window; I’ve been counting on that for a ling time. But your point is well taken. If I have to tape some translucent product (like paper? rather find a plastic product) over their interior surfaces (which I may well have to – the window glazing is really transparent), then so be it.

I have a few weekends to go before applying the lights (and interior window treatments?), so we have time to chat about it. Thanks guys.

Cliffy,

Do you already have your glazing glued in?

Chris

Chris, yes. The glazing consists of clear plex, adhered into the openings of the structural plex. The windows were bonded over that.

Well, the windows should be dirty, it is a working structure after all. So some clear flat from a rattle can will “frost” the windows and dirty then up a bit. Practice on some scrap first.

And yes, I joke with people, and I am not the kind of bloke who can dish it out and not take it. I find those folks annoying and frustrating.

And I am known, in some circles, for inappropriate emissions… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
