Hale & Norcross Dump Trestles

Haha, thanks guys! Yeah, The Blob was what I was imagining when I started this a few evenings ago… I didn’t know what to expect!

Here’s last night’s foam all trimmed up,

I got another can (#6), so that goes on next. Mo’ later…

[20 minutes later…]

Here’s the first final coat. Volume-wise, one can would have done it, but Dang it Hollywood, you’re right… It would be nice if one could squeeze out tiny bits, but no, there’s a sort of minimum amount of goo that the nozzle is designed for.

So tomorrow I’ll do the second final coat (maybe), and get back to the structures. Or as Bruce would say, the real model. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks guys,

And a fine “pile of foam” it is!

Thanks Rooster, I’m glad you like it!

Trying to bring this to an end, I just went to the hardware store for another can (#8). I started to give the cashier an explanation: “Wow, there’s a lot more to this home taxidermy thing than I thought. Especially when the cat won’t keep still!” But she looked so alarmed after the first phrase, I bailed with “Especially… naah just kidding.”

So I drizzled the stuff in the remaining holes, and will let it do its thing overnight. Though it’s been a lot of fun, I hope to pinch this off this foam gig tomorrow.

[edit] PS, here’s the current situation after half of can #8. At least 90% will be trimmed off, but as Ric said, I’m doing my dangdest to keep those poor foam people employed. (BTW Ric, I’m using the 3X expansion foam at this point…)

Can’t help it, but I keep thinking of the Elephant Man movie…

I wasn’t expecting to be right Cliff So when I read this I LMAO(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif). Thank you

Edit to add

Now that you are all done with the foam it dawned on me to ask why did you point and shoot the foam at the finish and not try to spread/smooth the bead of foam as you shot it

I dunno. I’m still waiting to see that cat taxidermy project!!! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

So, how thick will the Magic-Scuplt be? Will you embed/sprinkle sand on it? Or, at least have traces of some mineral (gold would be really cool!) (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Why ?

I thought everyone had a pencil sharpener these days. Besides pencil marks don’t work well on acrylic.

Nice looking spaceship there. The fins could be a bit more prominent, and maybe a bit more streamlined. But once you get it smoothed out, the windows cut in, and painted Starfleet gray, she is really going to look like something.

Ha, thanks Hollywood! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I did try that yesterday some, but as soon as the bead comes out, it wants to stick to anything – like a knife or stick. And then it won’t lay back down, but sort of deflate into an unspreadable goo.

Hey Bruce, yeah, stay tuned! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

I’m planning 1/4", and that will take 2 5lb kits ($40 each, ow). For texture, maybe the MS will be OK, but I’m planning to have sand on hand per H’wood’s suggestion. No glitter, this isn’t placer gold / silver, and it’s a waste dump. But I get it, that would be cool. It would be nice to find something lightweight, a little chunkier than sand, that I could pat down onto the MS. Also, I’ll have to paint the MS, to that’s another opportunity to inject texture.

Roger that Rooster, and I think you’ll enjoy this product:

Foam’s all done!

I’ll admit that I took the time to fill / saw a few more voids and divits, and basically use up the can. Why not, it’s worthless on the shelf after using it once.

The shed needed trimming and shingling, so that took a few hours.

Tomorrow I hope to trim out the ore bin (not the chute, that comes later), maybe do some weathering, and start prepping for the trestle build.

Thanks friends!

Cliff that looks… good… yeah, that’s it. Good!

For some reason, I’m reminded of this, which you could totally do if desired, but probably would not quite hit the theme for the build:

I’m looking forward to seeing this all put together. Should be cool! And very non-poopy!

Jim, if that turd emoji were lighter in complexion, it would be perfect. You’ll work on that, right? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Dave, that’s weird; I was thinking the same sort of thing, but smaller…

Maybe this would work Cliff, http://coleventuresinc.com/ seems to be a close source

Or maybe here with pics of sizes. and most quarries will sell you a pail of material at a good price

http://www.wirtzanddaughters.com/Sand_and_Stone.html

What about grinding up the waste foam you have? If you feed into a spinning wire wheel, it should chunk off in coarse bits, and it would be free texture, since you have the waste foam you cut off to make that spaceship, ah, tailings pile.

I really made a statement when I would sweep up the sand in the street gutter. Put it on when your play dough is wet and shake off excess after it dries.

Not sure what color your waste rock should be nor do I care however aquarium stone come to mind? This is indoor stuff ya’ know! However being outside without water the UV might wreck the color and make it deteriorate. I played with the stuff back in the day but it pissed me off as it didn’t give me the same feel good experience as beer did.

Those are all great ideas and pointers, guys thanks very much!

Since the MS is gray, I’m pretty sure it will need (latex?) paint, maybe a couple colors randomly blended to produce something like this (but not as old and eroded-looking):

The model is getting pretty heavy, so the lighter the better. On the other hand, an extra pound won’t make a huge difference at this point.

So, the texturing material needs to work with paint (as the binder & top coat), have some variation in size, resist breaking or breaking off, and not be really heavy. Dave M, much as I like your idea, I think these foam bits would break off (it’s pretty flimsy); but maybe there’s something stronger out there. So that leaves actual rock, with regular dirty sand (not “play sand”) maybe being a good combination of what’s been suggested.

Hmm, I have a sample of Precision Board, a very hard, high density, foam board used for signage & etc. And, 2 weeks from now, I’ll be at a place where they throw away scraps of this kinds of thing all day long. But I’d need an old tough blender or something to break it up, we’ll see.

Today’s mainly been finishing the trim on the shed & ore bin, weathering and misc. detailing. Here’s how it stacks up.

Long way to go, but I’m happy to get to the woodworking phase: the trestle.

Thanks for viewing,
