Y’know… For some reason I thought Cliff was in VA…but he’s up in that dreaded MD state. Oh well, yeah, but. OK. No real excuse cause the guy is sincere. or sort of… Oh,maybe not SO much. but, DANG, the guy is good, isn’t he? eh? I just hope he has some beer or something to justify the trip?

That seems like profiling to me …Especially coming from a guy that stole Ric Goldings facial hair

Bruce, I’m not sure what you were trying to say… you miss your meds last night? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Thanks anyway though, haha!

Cliff

PS, FWIW, my moving out east was a condition of marriage… We used to live in VA, was nice there. But moved to the People’s Republic of MD in '96. Just so you know though, I’m an native (northern) Californian.

I did a brief experiment this evening with the foam. And first off, thanks guys for all the ideas and advice and concerns. It’s all helped shape my approach here.

I got a can of Touch 'n Foam “Home Seal Minimum Expanding Sealant.” Well, it was minimum all right! It foamed up quickly; but it hasn’t grown much from the, say, 2-minute volume. After about 20 minutes, it’s grown about a half to one inch outward at the most, and mainly in the lower portions.

At this rate, I’ll need 15 cans maybe; and that ain’t cheap. But the (hopefully) higher density of this product will be good for the outer carving layer. So I’m probably going to get their regular foam for the main volume, and use this stuff for the last inch or two.

BTW, I tell ya, I was prepared for Foamageddon. Had the chain saw ready, the scuba gear, EPIRB, all that. I was expecting it to act like the stuff I used when I was a youngun’. Kinda anticlimactic though… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

[brief interlude]

After about 40 minutes now, it’s all dry on the surface, yet squishy on the inside. It’s wanting to belly out at the bottom though, so I put a couple “belts” of painter’s tape on to hold in up.

PS, I sure hope I don’t end up on the local news tonight…

Another foam update. The expansion stopped after a little more growth overnight.

After trimming it though, I learned a few things. Number one, the two big globs have a void in the middle. So I was obviously putting too much on at a time.

So I opened it up some for the still-gooey innards to have a chance to cure. Next time I’ll just go slower, and apply it in layers.

I also noticed that the stuff doesn’t bond to the acrylic, except for surface contact. It would be easy to dig out. But the acrylic seems to be locking it in. And just to be sure, I’ll run some stainless wire through some of the peripheral holes for the foam to envelop and grab.

All in all, the stuff is firm, is said to be waterproof, sticks reasonably well, and is easy to carve. That’s what I was hoping for as the support for the Magic sculp surface.

I used to use wadded up newspaper when doing the hard shell base for my plaster castings …

Hey I found a mine and head frame / bins I want to have on my pike, shall I send you a pic so you can print it out? Ol buddy o’ mine.

Thanks

I hear you Cliff even if you don’t hear me at times!

Hi John, yeah, this foam is exactly that newspaper thing (I did it too years back), but hopefully helping to structurally support the magicsculp surface.

John, sounds great, as soon as I retire… But heck, with all your skills, CAD and 2D lasering would be a piece of cake!

More foam news…

I’ve been gradually adding the stuff this week, letting it expand and dry before adding more.

The yellow pieces are blocking where the bents go (thanks Daktah John for that material!). They’re wired in place to brace against the foam expansion.

Here’s the next layer in place (1 more can added):

Just like playing in the mud, love it…

Thanks Hollywood! After one more can, maybe tomorrow, I hope to have the foam pretty much done.

Looking good, Cliff. I’m enjoying watching this come together. And learning too (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif).

Ah Hah !!!

Love it !!!

Careful! Sector H-Z-3 looks a bit too high when compared to the photo. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looks very promising - nice job!

Am I the only one that thinks that looks like a slimy alien monster? Too many scifi movies and novels I guess…

The Blob?

Looks more like two(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

If you would have used the expanding foam it would have only been a third of one can. And from the time you started until now, you could probably have the area around it cleaned up or somewhat under control. No guts, no glory. However, the investors of the foam company do appreciate your support of their product. Good work! Thanks for the documentation.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
