Large Scale Central

Had a bad morning

Now thats not a discoloration or a bruise under the nail, it a very large wood splinter from one of our doors perfectly wedged under my pinkie nail, dont ask how, it just happened this morning. It didnt hurt alot so much as sting a bit but I knew it had to come out before it got infected. So spent the whole morning at the Ugrent Care facility, after one tech tried for about 20 minutes it took two techs finally to get it out, along with a series of lidocain shots under the nail and two local nerve blocker shot in the finger joint, and I STILL FELT EVERYTHING :open_mouth: , after cutting back the nail as far as they could, one tech had to lift the nail with this rather formidable looking tool ( I want one now for my tool box) and the other used tweezers to pull it out. so here I am tonight and the nerve blocker has finally worn off, wish it hadent. Oh well be 1000 worse if I had to wait till monday to get it treated. I’ll never be able to watch POW war movies again where they torture someone with shoots under the nails because I’ll remember those two tech, as nice and as helpfull as they were, I’ll stiil think “Ah OK Joe, we have wayz to make you talk!” Beleive me I would talk! :open_mouth: Gonna put a crimp on the layout progress for a couple days. :frowning:

Ouch. Not fun :frowning:

TMI…
You made my butt hurt
Ralph

been there, got “lucky”, I lost the nail so it was easier to get the sliver out - and it grew back.

But I can guarantee, for about a week to 10 days you WILL notice all those little jars and bumps your finger gets during a normal day – in a way that you never did before… especially when just lying in bed at night or sitting around ‘doin nuthin’

It’ll also come in real handy during that time for letting you know when your blood pressure goes up, or the barometer falls.

I feel for you my friend, but I hope not to do it again real soon!

I used to take those things out for a living. It was fun, but they were just Marines. Real tough guys.

You have my deepest sympathy.

Hope you get back on track soon.
This day has been a real bummer for a lot of people.
Heal quickly.
David

Ouch! Victor. I went week at the knees just reading about it. Hope the wound heals well with no side issues.

And yes, David, the last couple of days have been petty grim for many worldwide.

You made my nail hurt just reading it. Why is it anything with fingers: spliters, nail cut to short, paper cut hurts like hell.

Shawn, because there are lots and lots of nerves concentrated there that allow us to do all the crap with our hands that humans do. If you think folks talking with a mouth full of Novocain is ‘funny’, watch somebody try to do most any task with a numb hand… of course, if you actually laugh they’d be right to club you to death with it.

I feel your PAIN Bro.

did nmot need to see that first thing this morning.
that look likes it might hurt a bit

Larry were did your picture go?

Wimp!

I get those quite often and remove them myself. First goes a good thorough dowsing with Absorbine Jr. Stings like crazy for about two seconds (picture hopping around in anguish) and then the pain goes away. Usually if I’m careful I can inch beneath the nail enough to grab the splinter with tweezers and yank it out, sometimes I have to call on the wife to dig in a bit with a needle until it can be grasped enough to pull out. I’ve never had to lift the nail to remove a splinter. Once it’s out and clean another joyfully stinging dowse of Absorbine and another little dance until it numbs sterilizes the wound. I’ll cover the area with a bandaid if I’m going to continue working.

I never get an infection except when a splinter goes unnoticed for a time and is unattended. I don’t always notice them until awhile later when the area turns a bit red and starts to sting. Cedar splinters especially can be painful after a fairly short while. I use the same procedure for removing these as I do when they are caught right away.

Hehe! Life in the northwest where we “do it ourselves”.

Don’t any of you guys wear gloves? But even with gloves, a big slab of concrete came down on the end of one of my fingers - smashed it. Went to the doctor, a Japanese fellow, and he said that nail would have to come out with the pliers he had in his hand. He yanked it out, I said “youch!!!” and he looked at me as if I were some lily-livered occidental. The nail grew back; a year elapsed before I had feeling in the end of the finger.

Richard I’ve “doctored” my own wounds for years before I finally got medical coverage, the memories of those “operations” is dam well why I’m gonna take full advantage of having medical coverage even if I have to wait a couple hours in line to do so .

Finger is only tingly now, stopped throbbing last night, havent had the courage to take the bandage off yet.

About ten years ago a 2X4 I was carrying slipped and jammed a big 4" splinter into the tissue between the 1st and 2nd knuckles of my right hand. It hurt like hell so I pulled it out a little too aggressively. What I didn’t know at the time was that I had left a 3/4" X 3/16" piece of the splinter behind inside my hand. It wasn’t until the wound had healed and the swelling gone down that I noticed a “bump” there. I eventually mentioned it to my Doctor. We X-rayed the hand and found that a cyst had formed around the splinter. It doesn’t hurt at all and I can push on it and move it around and can clearly see the shape of the splinter. The Doc says that if it doesn’t hurt and doesn’t get it the way we might just as well leave it in there.

Do what my bro does over in SE Ontatio - give yourself some other pain to take your mind off it. A few years back when he was building the garage/shop next door to the house, he was working up in what was going to be the roof-space with an electric nailer when he jiggled and put a decent-sized nail through his left index finger.

Claims he never felt a thing.

He coulda been right. As he did it, he jerked back and hit his head on a truss and knocked himself unconscious. When he came to he was lying on the floor about ten feet down. He recalls that the pain in his head, back and butt were all so bad that he near forgot the nail in his finger until he scratched his head with it.

First law of occupation - always have a second or even third thing to occupy your mind when things don’t turn out as expected.
