Gun Jeep for my Army Train

I found a metal Testors M-38 WWII jeep model in 1/32nd scale at Hobby Lobby on sale. I thought it would be nice to have two on a flatcar for my army train. Then I thought of making one into a Vietnam Era M-151A1 jeep that we had in my company.

So I sanded/cut the metal body some and tried on the armor paper patterns I had made for my 1/35 gun jeep models.

The M-38 body curved in some, so I decided to layer on thin plastic to straighten out the body, which also allowed me to get the fenders straight across on the ends also.

Yeah, got carried away, but Moon Shiners should look nice on a flatcar someday. The other jeep will remain a M-38 for contrast and this is too hard to do twice!

Aww! Come on Jerry you know you can do 3 with no problem. This one looks nice

Making good progress on Moon Shiner’s, close to painting. Need door handles yet.

Mirrors are curved printing plate. Plastic ‘windows’ will fit in the gray channel. Jeep had like 3" thick plastic windows.

You are getting some mileage out of that roll of metal duct tape, aren’t you, Jerry?

Looking good, keep up the good work.

Just the hinges are made of that Steve. The metal armor and mirrors on top is used printing plate I got from a little local newspaper one time. The Testor’s M-38 kit this is based on says it is 1/32nd, but according to my scale ruler, it is about a foot longer in that scale, which is fine with me. I grabbed a few parts from a 1/35 jeep kit I had never used. White dash/ammo can on back/water can are castings I made years ago for my gun truck models. I may get a 1/32nd deuce and see about converting it to a M-35 deuce gun truck, just for grins.

Wish I could figure out how to stretch the stuff!! ...I go through it like my family goes through toilet paper!

Jeep’s lookin good Jerry

I sure found you want to buy the Nashua brand of tape. NOT the Walmart/Big Box stores brand, it’s a lot thinner. If not embossing or anything I guess the cheaper/thinner stuff would be okay.

;)

I finished up Moon Shiners. Never could find a dark green I liked, so I made it black, as man gun jeeps and gun trucks were. I used Papilio Ink Jet Vinyl to make the lettering and graphic. Stars were some vinyl ones I had. 8th Trans Group had a yellow stripe on the hood of all it’s vehicles for easy i.d. from the air.

Top view shows the silver water can and the ammo can by the convoy commander’s seat on the side. You can see the top of the radio also.

A comparison shot of the M-38 Testors Metal kit that I used to create the M-151A1 that Moon Shiner’s was. Lots of fun was had!

That looks great Jerry. Your making a nice collection of Army stuff. You should make an army base on your layout.

Looks great Jerry, but WHERE’S THE GUN?

Jerry… great job on the Jeep…

Thanks guys, Dave here it is with the gun, had an odd mount. Stan did the Snuffy Smith decal.
