Green Day (not the band)

Every spring there seems to be a day when the amount of new growth hits critical mass and you notice the green emerging. Usually it’s just after or during a spring rainstorm. In Western Connecticut, that day was yesterday. After several days of cold and gloomy weather with rain, the skies brightened somewhat yesterday afternoon and the landscape was aglow with new growth.

Spring has sprung - Finally !!! The rain has stopped and the sun is trying to come out. And if the weather forecast is accurate, we will finally be moving to seasonable temperatures in the 60s next week.

Time to plant the trees I bought Sunday.

In Western Ny we aren’t quite there yet. We have had a few nights & mornings back in the low 30’s the last few nights. I had noted buds on the lilac bushes and some new growth but the grass is not trying to green up yet and the trees aren’t quite greening or budding yet. Our long range forecast is for more of the same though.

Chas

Ah, Springtime in the Rockies…

The mint has already begun its annual encroachment onto the right of way, the grass is starting to spring up everywhere I don’t want it, and a few ill-placed dandelions have made their presence known. Everything else remains quietly slumbering, evidently hitting the vegetative “snooze button” just a few more times. I can’t say I blame them, given the mixed messages our plants get out here–70 one day, 30 the next. (Today is one of the “30” days. The snow is pretty, at least.)

My sinuses, on the other hand, are telling me in no uncertain terms that Spring is decidedly here.

Later,

K

I fear that I will have to mow the lawn (weeds, since I never planted a lawn…) soon. I’ve got to get the sprayer out, before the county weed board gets on me for noxious weeds. That problem would be easier to solve if the county kept their noxious weeds under control. The county office that is responsible for weed control is a different bunch than the Noxious Weed Board (NWB).

Sigh. Gummint. A life form with six or more legs and no brain.

Yes, I do have fun telling the NWB about the noxious weeds on county land.

My “lawn” is made up of native grasses that I cut short, and never water or fertilize. Living off the paved road has its’ perks.

Steve, I aggree with you. I need to get ‘my young man’ over to mow the grass/weeds, while I have a powered mower, I can not walk behind it due to the knee! And the other noxious Blackberrys are taking overpart of the ROW! I need to start the Chemical warfair operations to et it under control. Of course there is the rotted out post and roadbed boards that need to be replaced and still can not put more than 50% of my weight on my right leg, a REAL pain in the ______!

KNEE!! Paul - I hope you get that fixed up soon (the knee and the post).

Trying to cut out early today and do some planting but the boss keeps finding things for me to do.

Tomorrow is officially “Earth Day” at the lake. It is also called Gore’s Federal Hippie Pot Smokin’ Youth Indoctrination Day, but that is another subject. Things are green and the State and Federal employees take over the youth training, so the teachers can sit in the sun. Suppose to rain and storm all day. There are a ton of Porta-Potties all over the place, but not quite enough for each student. Should prove an interesting day.

we had 40 inches of rain this winter, my xeriscaped front yard which is supposed to get little to no water, got deluged and as such has now burst into a veritable jungle, I weeded the front entirely back in late Febuary, its now even worse Uggh! I get to spend my Earth Day weekend waging chemical war against the weeds.

I want the band!

The grass here is finally getting green. I think I have more weeds then grass. Im not a fan of chemical sprays with little ones. Some small leaves on my barrberry are coming out as well as other plants on the layout. It feels great to see some life again although the weather has been rainy a damp with a day or so of nice weather. I have the week off starting Easter so hoping to get a lot done.
Ric, the pot smokers are out in full force over here. we have sunrise mountain and as soon as the roads open for the season the pot smokers hit the mountain. Already busted two last week.

Got my 6 new Arborvitaes planted on the hill above the tunnel portal last evening. Lots of the perennials are emerging. Was beautiful yesterday and so far today, but supposed to rain again Saturday :frowning: Maybe I can get a picture at the tunnel tonight before dark.

In celebration of Earth Day, we hauled in 1440 lbs of large Iowa River Rock to cover over an old flower bed between Fiddle and Red Bud. Jan says it is to eliminate the drought conditions in the area, because of the big white oak that the area sits under. I’m hoping this area will develop into the new raised switching yard above the fence hedge, we’ll see.

I hbeard the forcasst as well. Seems to rain or snow every weekend. Sunday looks to be nice.

Earth Day Report - Friday 15, 2011, 0825 - 53 mph wind came through Carlyle, not one porta-potti was left vertical. A river of smurf blood flowed toward the lake. Rangers called porta-potti company. They were told they will be picked up Monday. Lots of young children to indoctrinate, but most of them stayed in the big yellow busses.

 I think the stain from that blue stuff has a half life of 20,000 years :D Ralph

Earth day smurf day, it’s the day before the big fishing day in PA.
Well it’s the first day of Trout season in Northern PA. April 16 th.
Just as I expected the weather forecast is for heavy rain & strong winds.
No porta- potti where I go.
We all know Where Bambi goes nothing grows…
I guess I should just stay in bed.

I had three goals to achieve after work today, in order of importance… 1. Drink some of the Troegs Hop Back that I brought home from York (Thanks Dave) 2. Get a train out on the railroad. 3. Take some pictures of the new trees above Deep Cut Tunnel. I managed to get all three done before dark…
