Great Northern Railway: Why Risk Your Life?

1940’s Train Safety Educational Documentary

This film begins with scenes taken at the Wenatchee, WA depot.

I’ve begun and ended many journeys there.

Sadly, the depot is gone, now, fallen to the iconoclasts of the Burlington Northern.

Steve,

I’ll have to remember all those safety tips when operating my RR. I really did find it interesting.

Oops. We don’t follow many of those on the J & B. We tried some of those whistle signals, but neither the engineer nor the workers understood what was being signaled. Not too many problems with mounting the cars. Biggest problem is folks tripping over the switch stands…which isn’t really addressed in this film.

Pretty cool seeing the old stuff in the movie. Thanks.

My biggest misteak is stepping off the loco to the front, rather than to the side. I’ve gotten my Christmas goose early that way a couple of times. And it really does hurt to get your foot caught in the switch stand, especially without steel toed boots.

Great movie, Steve, thanks for showing it. More thanks for the occasional peek of an electric loco, too.

All the movies of electrics seem to be shaky and monochrome…surely there is SOME better-quality colour stuff around?

Note, no hard hats. But in those days, Fedoras or engineers caps were the norm. I’ve worked on jobs that required wearing a hard hat. Let me tell you they can be a pain to wear. Especially when working overhead or looking down.

The narrator mentions agility in youth. That is so true. I used to be able to scramble up and down ladders and scaffolding. Like I said, used to. The railroad management, or any business involving manual labor, turns half a head when it comes to short cuts, and we have all taken them.

Ads I neared the end of my career, on the job safety meetings became the norm once a week.

Good video and a good reminder for us all when we are operating our trains. I am very safety conscious and since I started using a popsicle stick to uncouple cars I haven’t been pinched once!

My wife kept trying to talk to me and I said stop I’m trying to watch a train safety video from the 40’s. she said I could tell from the news caster voice and the music it was something like that.

I thought it funny at the 32:00 minute mark that the scene looked like it was from a model RR then shortly after I found out why it looked that way.
