Grain tower

Cool grain tower in Michigan City Indiana, had to pull over and take a pic

Very cool! It looks like the same tower in the picture with NS heritage NKP 8100.

That is not a “Grain Tower”, it’s an old coaling tower. It was used for coaling steam locomotives.

…grinning…

Yep its a coaling tower but oh well Tom, cool pic anyways.

Mr. Huisenga,

I have to agree with several other responders to your comment and photograph on this thread. It is a coaling tower.

Specifically, it is a Fairbanks Morse 250 Ton Concrete Coaling Tower. It is about 3 miles North Northeast of downtown Michigan City, Indiana on the former Michigan Central Division of the New York Central System mainline from Detroit, Michigan to Chicago, Illinois. My recollection is that it was installed sometime in the late 1920’s.

There are other photographs of this coaling tower on the Canada Southern site on the internet.

There is a 400 Ton Fairbanks Morse Coaling Tower about halfway between Augusta and Galesburg, Michigan on the same mainline. It is approximately the midpoint of the Detroit/Chicago run and was used as a principal refueling spot on the mainline for passenger trains traveling in both directions. This tower is about 80 miles from the tower North of Michigan City, Indiana.

I hope this extra information is useful for you.

Thanks Gordon for the info, I had taken binoculars and reads the sign way up on top and researched architect company to get more info, could not find anything, great stuff thanks!!!

Sorry guys grain coal whatever it takes…

Tom

Either way…Are you gonna build it Tom?

David,

If Tom doesn’t build it, I probably will as well as the 400 Ton tower between Galesburg and Augusta, Michigan. I hope to have at keast one ready for display at the ECLSTS during March of 2014.

Respectfully,

Gordon Perrin

I was going to build the one I posted, got a mock up done and then a storm came through, tree limb landed on it and bent my mainline track!

Don’t have a destroyed pic but it’s crushed now, :stuck_out_tongue:

Cool and Cool!

That stinks Mark. Well you can always rebuild.

BTW…Mark I wasn’t stating that is was cool it got destroyed. I was only commenting on what I saw with the progress, You will rebuild I hope!

I run diesel, but I have a engine I got from Vic that will work, I am keeping all my pics of buildings, when the track is laid, buildings are next. and that is on the list of possibles.
