First two don’t work for me either. Using IE 8. Get the smokstak header with a 404 error, just like Rooster. Ralph
Browsing with Firefox here sooooo??
It’s Brians fault!
Thanks for a link to those lovely old pic Brian.
One puzzle is this. The grains seems to be loose and going down a shute into the boxcar. Is it into bags or would planks be across the doorway to contain the grain?
I was grateful to see a pic of a MILW wooden boxcar. Usually pics of MILW stock are steel cars.
Brian,
That second llink worked. Very interesting pictures.

Grain was shipped loose, there were special grain barriers across the doors. Here’s a link to a PDF of a patent of a grain door

Yes, it would go in loose. There are lots of good old pics of unloading grain at a feed and flour mills and those giant grain elevators in the Kalmbach MR book “Industries Along the Track”. Planks were nailed to the inside of the door about 2/3’s to 3/4’s of the way up. In the 60’s the used single use reinforced paper doors. Plug door boxcars became popular too. A panel in the top middle of the door can be opened for loading.

Grain was unloaded into big chutes right along the track. Much was manually pushed out with big handtruck like scoops. -Brian
Many thanks HJ and Brian for your comments.
I guess the Patent applies to steel cars as the Patent was filed on 21st. October, 1974. I also recalled having read about paper being used some while ago. The problem is as you advance in years memory retention 'aint what it used to be.
I don’t have any plug door boxcars at present: maybe I should remedy that. lol. But I do have five single door and two double door cars. But I guess I should stick to coal hoppers, I am rather fond of them.
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
