Large Scale Central

Graham County # 1925 Shay at Spencer

The Shay may not be returned to operational status.
From the web-site:

“The Shay is currently out of operation because of mechanical issues. The restoration needs will be evaluated before a decision is made about returning the engine to operational condition or displaying the locomotive as part of the collection.”

I would hate to see the Shay regulated to a static display.

Talked with someone about this awhile back. It appears that when originally returned to service, its hours were such that it required a major maintenance call within a few years (meaning at the very least new tubes, if memory serves.)

Money being progressively harder to come by, and the 604 also being on the to-do list, it may end up being shifted down in priority.

At least that’s what the story was last I asked.

It was restored and put into service in 1998. It has been out of service for at least two years now.
It probably is a money thing. With enough money, you can fix anything.

The best way to make a small fortune in the steam restoration business is to start with a large one!

Thanks for that info, guys - I’ve sent it off to Rick Henderson - http://www.shaylocomotives.com/ - runs THIS page.

For Shay lovers it’s a real boon, and it’s a real living book…
