GP38-2 / smoke fluid problem

I guy dropped off a GP38-2 unit that his son
overfilled with smoke fluid. I gather it was
dripping out the bottom of he unit. This unit has a revolution decoder installed.

I expect the fluid has evaporated but is there
going to be an issue with residue left on the
circuit boards shorting things?

David

I think that I would take the Rev card out and dry it off first, just to be sure. There probably should not be any problem, but why take a chance on releasing the magic smoke?

I opened the unit and could see right away that the lower smoke unit circuit board was finished.
The unit feels like it has a film of some sort on it.
I will need to talk to the owner. I do not know if he tried to run the unit after the fluid overflow.
Maybe the unit was fried before. I have not powered it up yet and I think you are correct a
good cleaning will help prevent the chances of Magic Smoke.

David

I talked to loco owner. He did run the loco after the fluid spill.
He sent it to me because it had been running poorly lately and
He saw magic smoke. I have found the smoke board located on the loco frame is burnt
In two locations and there is a broken wire from the front truck track pick-up.

Always better to get the problem from the owner than a middle man.

David

How many of those boards and smoke units do you want?
TOC

I should be ok thanks. Paul in Ottawa put some in the mail yesterday.

I wait until I get a box full, then throw them away.
I don’t know…20 units and 10 boards in the box now.
Eventually they will go away.

If you have the fan driven units, I think I know a buyer

Greg

Okay. I have no idea what they are, but I know what box they are in.
I’ll look later.
