GOVERNMENT GONE MAD

I have just seen that Denmark intends to charge a tax on magazines printed outside the EU such as hobby mags and other mags e.g GR & Nat Geo etc., thus increasing the annual subscription by 600%! That’ll be a bitter blow for Danish modellers who sub for US mags. Before they can get the mag they have to attend the post office and pay the tax!! No tax…no mag…

ACHTUNG! Ze reading of foreign magazines is verboten. . . .and to think they thought we had got rid of the Gestapo for them in 1945:-)

No wonder so many of them emigrated to Great Britain a while back.

Just remember that apart from Lego and high-priced hi-fi products, the Danes don’t really have all that much going for them these days.

I wonder if this is a start of a trade war? The EU - v - the rest.
Perhaps the Australian born “Princess” might be needed to bang a few heads together so that common sense prevails.

Hi Tac…They got some darn good looking females…none settled around our neck of the woods tho’

Gee, perhaps they can use the Internet like we do. Oh wait, the greedy rats in Hollywood are trying to shut that down too.

No, now ‘they’ (Big Brother) wants to censor the Internet! Next election we need to censor them out of office!

Avoiding political comments, if possible, Denmark is not that large a Country. All they need to do is pop down the road to Germany, or cross the water to other Scandinavian States and pick up the mag there.

Joking aside there is more to the report that is contained in that newspaper clip. What was not expanded was the comment about ‘whether is was a private individual or business’. I wonder if that has a reference to publications with a subscription?

However, it has yet to be voted upon, I believe, and most here do not live in Denmark.

I recall a comment about fish: Tac will know what I mean.

Alan I think this rule applies across the EU, not just Denmark.

Not in the UK Vic - AFAIK  As long as our politico’s don’t read the Danish press.

Actually VAT (sales tax) differs amongst European countries, just as it does in the different States of the US. For instance if I use a UK telephone system I will pay 20% VAT on top of the call costs. However using Skype (via my pc) I pay only 15% which is Luxemboug Tax.

Consequently I use Skype for all my overseas calls.

One of those increasingly-frequent times when the British government will tell the EU to go p!ss up a rope.

That gets my vote!

I think the UK has one of the highest rates David. Hiked up to 20% from 17 1/2% when the new regime got into power. They maintain we are broke.

Not everything has a high rate however, for example most foods are zero rated, not domestic animals food, luxury foods, chocolate etc. though, which is rated . Notice it is not exempt, just zero % rated. In other words they could slap a figured tax on it if they wanted to. That would cause riots though. Ciggies, booze, gas is rated and carries an extra, extortionate extra amount of duty. (In other words an extra tax.)

Hey TAC
The Danes have been imigrating to England since the early first century…Reading Bernard Cronwell’s latest book Death of Kings. The hero Uthred is out batteling Danes again for King Alfred the Great. Pretends to be a Saxon but is really a Dane himself.

Love me some Bernard Cornwell. Hmm. A Napoleonic-era train would be a cool layout. Hmm, 1803. Maybe too early.
