Got any offbeat/interesting Mogul pix?

I managed to score another LGB Mogul chassis — just the chassis with a plow.

So the next step is to decide exactly what to do with it. I probably have a dozen or so Mogul photos in my files, but I thought I’d ask if anybody had something more interesting. I’m looking for something with the same wheel spacing because I’m too cheap to have new rods made, so that probably limits me to something from 1880-1945, either tender or tank.

I also have a choice of 3 cabs on-hand, LGB Mogul, Bug Mauler, and Delton c-16. But the rest will need scrounged no matter what I build, anyway.

I probably won’t start it until fall, but I need to start scrounging now to help spread the cost.

No offense intended to those who like Colorado prototypes, but I don’t really want just another cookie-cutter C&S Cooke. The missing stock LGB parts would cost more than I want to spend anyway. I found several other and even a few oddball Mogul pics, but they aren’t really inspiring me yet, either.

This one is the best I found so far, but it isn’t quite what I want either

Mik;

Do what you think is best, but the Reading fan in me is screaming “CAMELBACK! CAMELBACK!!” You did such a good job on the Winas Camel, why not another go?

Best of luck in whatever you choose,
David Meashey

Mik, how do you keep scoring mogul drives? I’d love to get a couple myself, but haven’t seen them since LGB stopped offering them as parts.

Jason, this one was offered by the guy who had the rod I needed. It’s pretty worn, but I figure it ain’t dead yet.

I did a custom build for a guy to get the other.

Dave, I really hate to break it to you, but that Mother Hubbard is Delaware Lackawanna & Western

The cab alone on that DL&W Mother H. is a thing of beauty, raises the loco above the ordinary.

I think this may be one of those “I’ll know it when I see it” situations…

Does the cab have A/C or is that a structure behind it? …If it is A/C why does it not have ditch lights and MU cabling? If it is a structure (tower) what is it? Editing to ask if that is Billy Gibons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard in and at the base of the cab?

David, if I’m looking at the same part you are, I believe its the rear oil-burning headlight. Compare it to the front headlight

OK, fine for the tank loco, pic #2 - that’s a rear headlight.

What about that old D&LW loco in the sixth picture Mik posted? What’s on that roof if not AC? Those cabs had a reputation for cooking the crew. Hardly surprising, given the location atop the boiler. It’s a fair bet that there was a matching ventilator like that on the other side, even though the fireman wasn’t in there. He was out back, of course, shovelling his heart out to keep that HUGE firebox happy, wasn’t he…

That loco is my fave… Mik might have to build that fabulous cab from scratch, though…

Mik - If you need detail photos of this one…

Just let me know. I work about 5 minutes from where she lives at the Danbury Railway Museum and would love an excuse to go visit again.

Jon: That Danbury mogul’s everything a loco should be… My favourite flag as well… Would you mind building a second one for me? I promise I’d love it.

I’ve learned to like it. I’m not a fan of smokebox door mounted headlights, but the curved cab windows and nice overall lines have won me over. I think when one of the kids I work with who is also an artist, did a nice water color of it is when I started liking it

I thought that was its nose.

Sure looks like the Tardis sitting on the roof. . .

LOL Pete…I don’t see DR Who in the picture so I’m gonna go with Jason’s theory and analysis at this point.

Editing to say I like the valve body as well…and the light bracket is like bent trefoils …huuum

John, it’s an off center roof vent… with louvers. No need to keep the fireman’s side cool… he’s busy freezing or baking on the tender deck.

I have a Bug Mauler body coming. If I decide to build this thing (or a fudged version thereof), I can use the cab, smokebox, sand dome, and firebox section… as well as part of the other B’mann cab I have in my junkbox. But I still need to scrounge a tender. (or build one)

Well, if I were building it I’d do something to change that. Really obvious assymetry on a loco roof would bother the heck out of me! And I could make up an excuse for a second set of louvres, like the supervisor often rode on that side, or the engineer’s pet rooster or something.
