Got a convert to steam trains!

Last year, whilst running a small demo track of 7.25" NG trains at a local air show, I was approached by a police officer who told me that a pal of his was mad on trains, but had never seen anything like the stuff he saw on Youtube - NG live steam. To cut a story short, we finally met up, only t ofidn that he lives less than 100 yards from me, and we spent this afternoon driving live-steam trains around my little backyard layout - in fact, we’ve just stopped now because it’s dark.

A former technician for Lola Racing, now working for McClaren Racing, he is very conscious of the work that goes into making one of these little steamers, and he was fulsome in his admiration of my little collection of American, Canadian, German, British and African locos, especially the couple with r/c. I almost had to use a wrecking bar to prise him off the transmitter.

He is, as they say, totally hooked, and has gone away with a bunch of pics, books, burnt fingers and ambitions.

All in all - a VERY successful afternoon.

Great tac, bet it made you feel good, and him!

That sounds great TAC - and he lives right in your neighborhood. How cool is that!

Two more coming over this afternoon, as well - Jeff’s kids! AND their next-door neightbour, too.

Going to be a full house/backyard…good thing I stocked up on gas.

I’ll bet Ig did all the work and you’re just takin all the credit…

Great work Terry. I wonder what he has on his Christmas wish list? I guess he is spoiled for choice - assuming he has enough cash to buy it.

Evenin, Alan - well the gleam was still there this evening when I went round with a couple of books he might find of interest - Tag Gorton's book on GR and Marc Horowitz' intro to live steam - both necessary reading IMO.

I spent most of today on a G1 track not far from Grantham/RAF Cranwell - took my 3-c Shay for a looooooong run. Needless to spoge, it needed watering up no less than THREE times on his mighty circuit…that is all part of the fun, though, I reckon.

Incidentally, I’ve just put a couple of HD clips on YT, and one more going on as I write this - I’ll edit this post when I’ve sorted them out, but the first one is called - tac’s trains - Regner Chevalier. No, I’m NOT the one driving it at 300mph - it IS radio-controlled, but NOT by me.

At last - it took over three hours to load…here is the HD video of the little Shay…

Nice video

Glajja liked it. the owner of the track [which is built in his orchard] sold a 1900 Aveling & Porter steam roller to fun his track…his wife said he was getting too fat to clamber around the confines of such a cramped machine.

Nice video Tac !

Wait a minute!!!! No Welsh ones? That can't be right....:P

Well, Actually, I DO have a Welsh loco - the AccuCraft ‘Earl’ from the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway, and all three pssenger cars and a full set of goods wagons. You can see ‘Earl’/‘Countess’ on youtube if you use the tags tac’s trains countess slow-running. Contrary to public opinion, 'our ‘Earl’ is not named after the Earl of Powys, like the real thing, but after our lobster, Earl.

I 'spose you could count my Garratt as Welsh - now - since the real thing runs on the Welsh highland Railway with its three Garratt brethren, but it WAS African.

…That’s better!

Love those Garratts.
Er… you have a pet lobster?
You have a Welsh wife.
Very odd…

I have a pet Irishwoman.

Not exactly a pet - more of a mascot. He is named Earl after the well-known phrase or saying, used when every opportunity is there before you - ‘The Earl is your lobster!’

Or something like that, anyhow.

I had a girlfriend once whose pet mascot iguanas hung out in her curtains. Great big things those iguanas were, too…
Just goes to show you, the whirl is your ostrich.

Cheers!

Indeed, now back to the monsoon hereabouts and trying to cover up the Garratt…

tac, wet.
