What if you painted the sheet with the mortar color first (as Ralph mentioned) and then used a foam roller to paint the brick color. I’ve used foam roller covers to paint smooth surfaces before, although I’ve never used them for hobby type painting. The foam rollers have no nap to them, so maybe they wouldn’t blotch the mortar color. You can find them at most hardware stores- Home D, Lowes, etc. Just a thought. Oh, and by the way, the JTT sheets look real nice. Thanks for the comparison shots.

Kevin: Yea, thats how Im thinking about doing it. Paint the mortar first, then either a foam roller or drybrushing the brick color onto it. Hell, they do it in the smaller scales and it looks great, why not us?

Jane paints the brick buildings first, using a latex enamel exterior paint… then she brushes on some slightly diluted mortor colored paint, then wipes off the mortor color paint from the bricks with a paper towel… She’s done this on the Colorado model brick buildings…

I used some grout compound on these Pola kits. Rubbed it in place, put clear Krylon on after. As I recall, it was a real PITA to do, but it does look nice.

I just saw this and it looks promising: http://www.robertsbrickmortar.com/ You’d have to clear coat it, but maybe it would hold up. Maybe Bob will review it for us.
