Large Scale Central

Goodson's Batteries

Craig, and I think if you can work them into your layout (space wise) they sure look great. Who ever seen a freightshed the same size as a boxcar?

I'm thinking that's big enough to double duty as a dog house :)
LOL! :)

Yep I'd rather model 1 large building then model a dozen or so smaller out of scale sized buildings! Hopefully one day soon I'll have a little bit more room then currently, but either way I'd be happy with just a simple building with a single siding (with everything to scale) then a whole layout in the same amount of room.

As the old saying goes 'Go big or go home'. Certainly will be impressive when it's done.
Well. I guess that old saying is what built America. It still is true I think but to a lesser degree 'cos others have copied.

Anyway Bob, I think that building is mighty fine and will be a great landmark on your railroad.

After fiddling with the building size for a while, I finally got something I like. I printed out a full-size side view on my large format printer. Its about 42" long, and about 34" high. Will be about 24" deep. AMS passenger car for comparison.

Bob, I like the building size-coach size comparison… can’t wait to see this build…

Nice! When you do the signage here’s a trick my boss taught me to train the eye to read vertically instead of horizontally. Do one word in a contrasting color background and foreground. On a brick building this could be achieved by putting a backer panel behind one of the two words. You could use white raised letters on the brick for one side and black letters on a white backer for the other. Or, if you want to use a sign panel, make it white behind one word printed black, and print the other side as a black background leaving white knock-out letters.

Neat idea, Jon. I think it needs something - it just didn’t “read” right when I first saw it.

Here’s one I did in 2008…

Yea, thats a neat idea. It doesnt read right with no contrast in the plain-jane one.

Got my JTT Products brick sheets yesterday. I really like them. They come in a package of two sheets. Each sheet is 7 1/2 x 12". Cost is $4.95 a package, so its cheaper than the Precision Products sheets. The sheets aren’t cut exactly square, but a bit of trimming will straighten that right out. The bricks line up vertically and horizontally, so seaming the sheets should be easy. They are thinner than the PP sheets, too. They also have a bit more character, you can see the unevenness of them in the picture:

Here’s the page for them http://www.miniaturetree.com/viewcategory.asp?DirID=151

What’s the actual dimensions of the brick? I’d like to compare the ones you got with the PP sheets and see which scales out better for 1/29.

Craig

Looks like a bit over 9mm by a bit over 3mm.

Oh …I like them brick sheets!

You don’t happen to have any of the Precision sheets for a comparison shot, do you?

Here’s a shot of both sheets. The PP on top, the JTT on the bottom.

Doesn’t really do it justice, they’re very different.

I can really see the difference. The JTT sheets have more defined corners on each brick and there looks to be a bit more mortar between them.

Has anyone ever tried painting these sheets brick red then flowing some dark gray in the cracks to look like un-painted brick? As I typed that I realized that without weathering it would look pretty fake. Probably better off just painting. Plenty of brick buildings have been painted.

I don't think it would look fake. But I do think it would be a royal PITA ;) You try it first and we'll let you know how it looks :D Ralph

Looks like they’ll be easier to paint. The PP sheets have deep cracks that are a PITA to paint. I’ll have to give them a try.

I think painting the sheet the mortar color, than using something like an ink roller to paint the bricks, would be easier. I painted each brick by hand in the photo. It didn’t take too long. But it’s not several sheets of brick. Ralph
