Goodbye To My Best Train Buddy

You all have heard me talk about my goofy cat “Topaz” many times. After more than ten years she had to be put down due to untreatable intestinal cancer. She was often the subject of some tall tales and snarky jokes. Following me around the layout like a puppy she was could be found in the middle of whatever I was working on.

I tried to count how many times she was mentioned here on LSC but stopped after about 200. There are a lot of threads. Not all mine. Some of you referenced her and a few met her in person…sometimes getting bitten or scratched for your efforts. She could be a little shit. Don’t take it personal, she was a one man girl, even hissing and swatting at the grand-kids and the ex-wife.

Her story on LSC began with this Christmas card.

Like most of us she learned bad habits from Rooster including insulting gestures.

Deep in the LSC archives is the story of how she helped steal and wreck Dave Taylor’s locomotive, made BBQ for Ben Hancock and was immortalized in miniature along with Dan, Bobco and Hollywood.

Of course she was always ready for mischief. Seen here plotting an attack on Dave.

She was so un-socialized when I found her that the shelter was going to put her down. She had been returned twice for being aggressive with children. It took several years but she finally calmed down. In the last few years she would come and sit in my lap in the evenings. Most of the time without bloodshed.

Here she is giving the “beef stew” treatment to one of the other cats. Easily the most ornery six and a half pounds in New Mexico.

I buried her on the hill below the house overlooking the lake. It was her favorite place to chase chipmunks and turkeys. Not sure what she would have done if she had ever caught one of those birds. They were more than three times her size.

She is missed, anger and all.

Adopt a pet my friends. They could turn out to be your best buddy.

It’s funny how they get to you, I am very sad to hear that. Hope her next adventure is more to her liking !

So sorry for your loss, sometimes losing a pet, a true member of the family, hurts more than losing a blood relative.

Boomer,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. I know how our animal companions can become woven into the fabric of our lives.

Sorry for your loss.
My best friend never demanded anything and was always there when I needed him. He was also a cat that lived 14 years with me.

So sorry for your loss. Pets touch our souls in so many positive ways,

Eric
