Good time to remove sod

This time of year and early spring are a great time of year to remove sod.

Yesterday, I was able to bury some patio blocks, very easily. Now I do plan for this by setting the blocks in place and allowing the sod to die out underneath, over time. So set each one is set aside and remove the inch and a half of dirt and dead sod and then replace at ground level.

Part of the plan of the garden railroad is to eliminate grass that needs to be cut. My little help to the environment by not running my lawnmower, as long. Another part is to do absolutely no weed eating or trimming. I do this by surrounding each bed or area with patio blocks. Put the wheel of the lawnmower on the patio blocks and cut away.

Anyway, if you’ve got sod or dirt to remove in the near future, you might check the soil and sod conditions, because the job went very quickly, yesterday.

Yea, any time I need to get rid of sod, I do it in the fall or the spring. I do exactly the same thing you do for patio blocks. Lay them in place, let the sod die, then cut the shape out with a flat bladed shovel and set them flush.

For larger areas, I run the tiller over the area then pick up all the big hunks of grass.
