Good look or bad?

I’ve been messing around with my “lindbergh special” and I decided to try to put window shades in the coach. It’s hard t do unless you pop the windows out. I managed to get most, but not all, of the three-window sections out, and faked up some window shades using 2 layers of masking tape. Now I can’t decide if it’s a good addition or a mistake. One problem is that the shades are not in all the windows. But beyond that, does it look better or not? Opinions welcome

I think they look great Mike!

I think it makes the model look a lot better. You need to do them all now.

Why do you have to pop the windows out? And why two layers of tape?

I don’t know if pieces from a manila folder might be easier or not.

I think it looks good, but masking tape may not be a good material choice for the long haul. The adhesive tends to dry up, then the paper separates from it, leaving a mess behind.

I like the idea - it makes the model look a lot more ‘populated by real people’. I agree with Bruce about the material used - maybe crepe paper would better simulate the texture?

Looks good. Maybe masking tape on manila folder sealed with CA?

Thanks all–I’ve since done all the windows. I went with tape because I could not figure out what adhesive to use. Cyanoacrylate fogs clear plastic, so I did not want to use that. We’ll see how the tape lasts.

Next Time I think a better approach would be to premake three shades for each 3-window section, and then put a right angle bend in whatever I use for the shade, and glue them t the underside of the “luggage shelf”. That way the shade would be off the glass a bit.

CA might cause the plastic windows to cloud, even after you think the CA is long dry, maybe a thin layer of white glue sealant instead?

Yes, I know CA fogs clear styrene! I was suggesting just applying it to the tape on manila separately. Shades could be glued in place with a couple of dabs of GOOP at the top out of sight.

I think the shades add a lot to the realism of the cars.

OK, now we need the finished picture!

I don’t know that you need to keep it away from the glass. Seems like extra work.

Well I went out today at lunch and took a few pictures

I’m calling it done, except maybe to modify the roof. I’m pretty sure the PRR tended to black out the clerestory, and they usually had a small arched section near the door at each end…

That looks great. It really makes the whole thing more realistic.

Is it real or “memorex” hah lol Regal looking good!!!

Looks better with shades.
But masking tape won’t last. I wouldn’t use any type of paper either.
Why not use styrene or acrylic and glue the shade above the window?
More work, but it won’t absorb moisture and curl and discolor.

Nice addition Mike

D'oh! I forgot about that. I did that for one of my buildings and it's lasted for years outside. I used some .010 styrene, painted with Krylon Almond.

Hahaha. If you did the shades like this picture, everybody would criticize it!

HOW DID I MISS THAT? I’ve been on ne railfan 100 times and never saw it

Nice windowshades! No wonder they went bankrupt
