Gondola challenge

And we’re off… Kit arrived

I am farther along after yesterday…floor planked and now working on the pieces to go onto the flooring. Waiting to add the bolster and trucks so it will sit level on work table top to be easier to work on…

…more pics on way this week .

Floor planks all installed…

Stained car body earlier this week with a solution made from white vineagar and steel wool. First time using this. It seems to have different effects on different types of wood. The two rails on the flatcar floor in the following pic are made of oak. They seem to darken more than the poplar/pine type wood.

All squared up and glued. next step to add the armor plating on the front angle for the artillery piece…

32 pound confederate naval gun carriage. Brass barrel was used from a cannon that I have had for some years laying around.

Stay tuned for more pics and progress…

Seeing that neat Civil War cannon got me thinking about an ongoing project I have been doing for the Lionel Layout for our local Clarksville/ Montgomery County museum. All throughout Tennessee there are 150 year anniversary remembrances of the “War between the States.” The man in charge of the Lionel Layout wanted a model of Fort Defiance here in Clarksville. The fort surrendered without firing a shot when US Grant’s ships appeared on the Cumberland River after destroying Fort Donelson a little bit up river. Figuring if that large fort could not deter Yankee aggression ( our valiant Fort Defiance only had three cannon) and because there were very valuable tobacco warehouses all along the Cumberland River the “Rebs” ran up a white flag and left. Here are a few shots of the model with 1:35 Columbiad artillery pieces.

The models are supposed to show Fort Defiance in a more aggressive mood and depict gunnery practice prior to surrender. I enjoyed learning about these old artillery pieces and I hope to learn more from your story about cannons on Civil War era railroad equipment. Thanks. Tom

Tom that looks really cool! I ve been wanting to do a project like this for a long time in G-scale but never got around to it…

I"ve also thought about a Civil War theme in G-Scale. But building a 4-4-0 correct for the period is beyond my ability.
I have a 1/24th scale model of the CSS Hunley. Plans are to do a static indoor display of the Hunley being transported by rail to Charleston,SC.

Civil War RR’s are a very interesting niche in our wonderful hobby.

Tom,
What did you come up with to use for the cannon balls… I was thinking about some type of craft beads or something… The soldiers you used in the diorama look like the ones that I paint, They are imex plastic 1/32 or something like that. I am not aware of any commercial available 1/24 scale soldiers unless they are custom made…

Hi Travis

The cannon balls came as castings in the Verlinden Productions model kits that I used for the build ups. I agree that large craft beads would work fine.

Yes the Confederate artillery crews are Imex 1:32 figures that I painted.

Looking forward to more of your build for the “challenge.”

Tom

Thanks for the Links Korm and Thanks Tom for the info

New progress today, Armor is cut and painted/stained…

Next tested for fit of opening for cannon.

and some of the hardware painted and ready to install…

Hopefully will get this all done in time…
Travis

Neat. That frontal armor looks ready to deflect just about anything black powder could hurl at it. Good job.

Tom

Over the weekend I made some further progress… wheel sets cut out from old bachman archbar trucks… http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa375/General1861/100_7302.jpgs Used a small c-clamp to press in the dowel for the screw. tried this to avoid mashing dowel, worked pretty good.

Next up was the gluing of the truck mounts to the underbody of car…

Then onto the “iron flat bars” made of strips of oak to hold down the “armor”

iron strips glued, touched up with black, and bolts from Ozark Miniatures that I had for another project… Looks like I missed some black on the iron slats…

So now I have my trucks mounted it seems to me that it looks to high from the rails. Opinions needed on this. I could lower it about 1/8 I think…

Stay tuned…

Well I am getting close to completing my 1st time entry for Mik & Dave’s Gondola challenge. I hand brake together and mounted

Along with the stave pockets and stirrup steps.

Link and pins in place. I have pics of the boxes I made for the Links will add them later today.
