Gold leaf

I am day dreaming about bashing the B’mann Lil Big Hauler I acquired from David M. I have a distinctive livery I want to play with. Stan made me a very nice white herald, name and numbers. But I was thinking instead of white pin striping it might be fun to put some gold in it. Not sure if using two different colors I will like but lets say I do go this route I thought it would be fun to try gold leaf. Eric’s 1:1 resto project gave me the idea. I have never done it and I am wondering how feasible it would be on something small.

Not sure what you are thinking but Krylon makes a gold leafing pen

Like Rooster said, and gold metallic gel pens are available about everywhere. Also, you might check out the automobile pinstriping companies…they sell gold pinstripes.

I have not had the best of luck with the gel pens. Krylons metallic paints might be the way to go didn’t think about that. I have used the silver on other things. Regular gold paint doesn’t do it for me although on such small details I doubt it would make a difference. It is to uniform where gold leaf has a depth and richness to it. The metallic paints mimic that well enough. Like I said on these fine details likely regular gold paint would look as good.

Just looked at the leafing pen and that is not the paint gel pen i was thinking of that is an intriguing product. I will experiment with that

I used a black gell pen to put the segment lines in the “cement” of my 1:48 airport. They can do some nice fine lines if you get the right one.

Real Gold Leaf requires some very good hand painting skills. You need to paint on the Gold Size which is what the leaf adheres to, then burnish the pricey gold foil sheets into the sizing. When your done, you can paint over top with a clear lacquer to seal it.

For modeling purposes, adhesive backed imitation gold foil might be the answer. It can be cut into stripes by a sign shop or even Del at G-Scale Graphics. If you go this route get extra to play with on scrap material to get the hang of it - it is quite fragile especially when cut small.

Personally, I like imitation gold vinyl. It looks pretty good and is easier to work with than the foil. It is not a metallic looking as the foil.

Yeah I understand just enough about gold leaf to ruin stuff. For the size I was wondering/thinking of a vinyl stencil and spray on a size lift the stencil and apply the leaf. But I am thinking this will be way harder than I want to try and won’t have the results. I am liking the other suggestions better.

I do my lettering and lining using gold pens “Pilot” brand extra fine. I do the lining using a ruler of course but lettering by hand. I am not as good as that sign painter who did number 9. But I kind of like the hand lettered look… It goes with my hand made cars.

I used water based acrylic varnish over it to keep it bright, without, it seems to fade.

I have pretty much worked with all products mentioned in one way or the other. The only one I have not worked with was Roosters suggestion of the Krylon Gold Leaf Pen. I personally own one still in the package but I purchased it for non modeling purposes.

If this pen works out for Devon then “I know” I can open and use it with intentions of purchasing a few more. If not I still have the receipt and can put the $10 on another product.

I “personally” would like pictures of the findings and results!

Well you might have to wait just a little bit. I have to finish the MIK and my 2-6-0 and then I might let myself start bashing then lil big hauler. Info have some rolling stock also. To many projects. But I might just buy then pen and see what happens.
