Go Daddy hacked... my train stuff went with it

What did I ever do to Anonymous? And why would they think harming ME would make me more supportive of them?

Yes, I have back-ups for most of it. No, I’m still not amused.

Well, things are back up… after only about 4-1/2 hours. Kudos to Godaddy, and a big Bronx cheer to whoever thought bringing them down was a good idea.

Mik those idiots have nothing better to do. They should get out in the sun more often

Maybe they need to be Hacked! I did not go with Godaddy so lost nothing but I understand the frustration of those who lost stuff.

Actually how about chopping them - one finger at a time - instead of hacking?

I think the references in favor of the hacking go to the fact that GoDaddy was a supporter of SOPA or Stop Online Piracy Act, which would have given large companies unprecedented power to go after pirates… but could have been abused to introduce massive censorship effects on the internet.

They reversed their position on SOPA in January.

OTOH hacking is illegal, no matter what moral justification you try to give it, and thousands of small businesses were hurt more than GoDaddy.

There service suits my needs and pocketbook. If I refused to use anything from any company that did or said things I don’t agree with, I’d be naked, starving and not even have a box under a bridge to call home. (Boycotts are too often like cutting off your nose to spite your face.)

Bringing it back to trains, I’ll even buy from Aristo - when/if I can afford it and it fits my needs. And they’ve done worse things to me (personally) by producing products that didn’t perform as advertised…

I’m NOT suggesting Aristo should be hacked, either.

The hacking they did is vandalism pure and simple. I hope they value their position enough to go to prison for it.

Yeah, I hold my nose and shop here or watch that. I detest the hyperpoliticization (pronounced “tribalism”) of our society, and hope we get over it soon.

Okay, bench two is built. Back to the trains.

Sorry Mik, I didn’t mean to offend. I didn’t know about the change of their position, I was just going on what was given in the article… course, on further consideration, that was another mistake on my part, I really should know better than to believe anything the media says without researching it on my own.

That’s okay jason. Just say 10 Hail Bachmanns, and 5 Our Ephram Shays and all will be forgiven… right Fr Fred?

Mik,

I also use Go Daddy, and although there is a ton of stuff stored there, I still maintain my own backup of all that data on both an external HDD and DVDs. I once lost a HDD with several thousand dollars of paying work on it I had not backed up. Learned a hard lesson, never again.

If I might, I’m confused… What could you guys have lost? I though GoDaddy was a Registrar… they a hosting company too?

Sorry, the way you guys are talking, I get the impression that they also have a cloud drive service?

Me personally, I have a RAID array with two 1TB drives in full mirror, with plans to expand that to a 3-drive mirrored array using two internal drives and a hot-swappable drive bay. I’m not sure I like the idea of uploading all my personal day into THE CLOUD.

I used to have a hot-swappable RAID 3 array. Data split over 3 drives. Lose a drive, insert a new drive and the two good drives rebuild the data on the new drive. Worked great through 3 or 4 drive failures. Then lightening took out 2 drives, and I was hosed. RAID arrays still need backed up ;)

My current set up is just like yours, two 1TB drives in a mirrored array.

What did Ralph and Jason just say?

You really don't want to know. That way lies insanity. :P

I am not sure Wayne, but something about bug killer, clouds, swapping and a whole bunch of other stuff. Maybe our resident Rooster could fill in us less 'knowledgeable folks in.

In clear text: they like to have the “Mess” in their house, instead of somewhere that is exposed to all kinds of interesting things. Those two won’t volunteer to fly to Mars either; no back-up rockets, no space parachutes and not even a beam to follow when things go wrong.

Honestly you guys don’t want it or need it (Wayne/Randy) I understand what was said but not gonna explain it cause Randy is too old and I don’t have the time… I still subscribe to GR magazine that a person delivers to my home and puts it in my physical hand …A physical copy of something that I can STILL read by oil lamp or candle on a toilet that works from gravity fed water when the power grid is down.

It amazes me that one will not accept the changes in the 1:1 prototype train advancements which has joined us here at LSC modeling them in a very diverse grid (steam v/s diesel)…(battery v/s track power) …(float your RR or go below the frost line)

However some can rely on modern electronic technology like it’s their life! When ya’ stump the old guys that do a pretty good job of keeping up with the modern technology then it’s enough for me
I still think old school still rules a lot anymore! … it was the old guys that hooked me into this hobby to begin with!
Just a thought

Jason, GoDaddy does webhosting… with a goodly amount of bandwidth and storage for just $5/mo. My train pages are piggybacked on the-ashpit.com web board

they said, that they are using belt and braces - computerwise. meaning, they store everything not just on their rented space in the internet, but on their computers too. and on their computers they make copies of everything on a second data disk.
