GN box-cab electrics

Mornin’, all. Any of you guys out there got any piccies, plans and so on of the big GN box-cab electrics? A good pal of mine near Eugene, who was lucky enough as a gibby to get cab rides on thse old monsters from BOTH his grandpas, is keen for me to build a couple of Y-1 or Z-1…

For some reason all the images I can find only show the one side, and i know that these locos were assymetric.

Advice, and any help is greatly appreciated, as ever.

Tac, I don’t have plans…sigh I used to have a book on these, but I can’t find it. Prolly loaned it to Featherkile… I’d like to build a Y-1A. Slap two F-3’s together. They built them (it) in my home town…Spokane at Hillyard.

Y class.

You could mangle a GG-1 chassis for the drive!

I’m surprised we have not seen someone paint a GG1 in Empire Builder colors…:expressionless:

Here is another look at a newer (at least cleaner) Y-1A.

From Lindsay Korst’s collection. Looks like the same side, though. This looks like it might be the other side. Note the structure on the nose.

Again, from Lindsay Korst. Here is a pic of a Z-1

Hi Steve.
Thank you for crediting the creator/owner of the photo collection.

We criticise Marvin the (less than) Magnificent for not doing that.
I believe we are obligated to do so.

Yo John - THAT’s the baby! Jeepers, it’s ugly! But handsome in a mechanical way, too. the boxy bits and details are pretty easy to replicate with all the styrene stuff we have these days, and brass wire and so on…but those trucks are going to be a royal pain to replicate! Hmmmmmmm Just costing it out, approximately that is, 1 x USA trains GG1 @ 2500 LOTS of styrene stuff @ say 100 Pantographs from huebner @ 300 electronics and so on… @ 250 a coupla crocodile sound units @ 295 x 2 Sheeeeesh. that’s a load of money! Plus, of course, my presious time, say a minimum of 250 hours at $10 an hour… I gues I’ll ask that nice Mr Bednarik on the other forum to get his company, Fine-Art Models, to make one - it would be cheaper… Thanks to all for the great piccies, though, all are safely garnered in to the reference section. best wishes to all tac and the boys www.ovgrs.org

Terry,
The Pennsylvania Railroad purchased all the GN Y-boxcabs (7 in all I think), so you can find more pictures of the units on the PRRT&HS (Pennsylvania RailRoad Technical & Historical Society) web page.

Indeed they did. And the Pennsy was surprised to find that they were so well maintained that all they needed to do was file off the serial numbers and paint five gold stripes on them. :D

Great and furry thanks to all of you who took the time and trouble to respond to this old fart’s request, and even posted fine piccies, too. Now I has the book and the calendar.

Thanks to you a pal has now spent well over $1500 on a couple of H0 brass electrics that he didn’t know he needed [snigger].

Luckily I’ll get to see them when we are over in Oregon for CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR at Cannon Beach!!!

Whooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Can’t wait - PignPancake here we come!!!

Ain’t no place on earth like Tolavana/Nehalem and our favourite of all time - Wheeler. Many happy hours spent outside the junk-store there, drinking coffee and pontificatin’…

Richard and Helen, go get the coffee on.

Best to all

Coffee’s always on here in “busy” Port Orford. Most exciting thing we do around here next to the sidewalk rolling up ceremony each evening!

That's precisely why we love it.
