Glueing plastic to metal

I would like to do some detail work on an upcoming steel bridge project. It would be a lot easier to use plastic details then try to fabricate and attach metal parts. Can anyone recommend a glue or bonding agent that will allow me to bond plastic to metal?

Thanks!

I have no experience, but I’m guessing the answer will be an epoxy. Plastic to plastic glues work by dissolving the plastic and forming a weld. With metal to plastic, that type of glue will be a very weak bond. Ive used epoxy to bond metal to wood with good results.

Epoxy is probably the right choice. Make sure where youre attaching to is clean of all oils, and roughed up (80 grit or so). If you can, drill holes into the metal behind the plastic to give the epoxy something to flow through.

My thoughts would be something that was outdoor rated but had some “give” to it. Expansion rates of plastic and metal being different and all…pieces will start popping off when it gets cold outside.

I use E-6000, 3-m Automotive trim adhesive, or goop

Goop i9s my adhesive of choice.

Is Goop available at hoppy shops? Where would I find E-6000 or 3-m Automotive trim adhesive?

for Goop Lowes for sure. I snarf mine from Big Lot’s about a buck cheaper here in socal. 3-m stuff from auto supply and the other stuff is too expensive for me but it is usually found in craft stores.

Thanks!

3m plastic and emblem adhesive is the way too go IMO. ;)

I used this place to get the E-6000. Cheap and fast.

I'm gonna have to try them as a supplier!

Sorry about THAT!

Here’s the site: http://store.creative-wholesale.com/Home/tabid/201/Default.aspx

To buy that from there it is $17 for 3.7 oz. Haz Mat shipping fees. Goop @ Lowes = $ 4.56 @ Home Depot = $ 4.57 @ ACE = $ 7.99. ACE has the E-6000 for $ 7.99 also

I like to use Gluesmith glue for plastic to metal. Or metal to metal. Works great, just don’t get it on your fingers. Gluesmith Glue Link I fact I just used it to glue tiny metal wire to a plastic water tank on our [url=

They sure didn't charge me that much for shipping. It was $3.60 for the E-6000, $3.81 for the black E-6000.

Damn, and I thought glue was glue.

Napa and most auto parts stores sell the 3M product.

I like to use Lawn and Garden GOOP, according to the MSDS theres not a difference between the various formulas of GOOP but the other varieties breakdown outside while LNG doesnt since its UV stable…your results may vary…

I use one of many Polyurethane glues.

Some years ago I bought Gorilla Glue and then found a Bordens Poly glue. Move from Vegas to Phoenix.

By the time I got around to checking the glues, the Gorilla was a brick, but the Bordens was usable. Then the Bordens became a brick.

I am just finishing up a large tube of PL, it is also turning into a brick, but I drill into it to find liquid glue and use that.

All of these are superior in the plastic to metal adhesion, but expensive and no shelf life.

So I am still looking for an answer, I may pursue some of the suggestions above.

I do use JB Weld, but it is a bit inconvenient and not cheap.
