Large Scale Central

Giving it all up again

Three years ago I tore up the RR and sold it all off. A year after that I started to rebuild it. Two years later (today) I’ve decide to chuck it all in. I have fun with it but it was more fun building it than having it. If you live around here or know someone who does and want to come and get stuff for a price of course let them know.

I’m fine by the way ( thanks for asking  ) This just doesn’t do it for me anymore. I’ll keep something to run at a friends place near by. Got some good deals…come on down

Sorry to hear this Larry. You have such a nice railroad, it’s a shame to see it all go away. But if it doesn’t bring enjoyment then I can understand your decision.

Since you enjoy the building process maybe you can custom build for people.

Wow, I’m speechless :frowning:
Ralph

A lot of it is that it’s just me out there running the trains 99% of the time. More fun to do stuff with other people. Although building things I enjoy doing alone.

I have the same problem. Nobody close by to run trains with. Ralph

Larry

Sorry to hear that you are not enjoying your railroad. Your building has been most inspirational and I hope you continue to have creative building cycles.

We are operating on Saturday and you are most welcome to join us.

As having visited Larry and his railroad, this news is somewhat devasting and a total shock… I thought it was a beautiful railroad, and the new building additions looked to be a wonderful addition to the railroad… Larry’s buildings have also been an inspiration to me for constructing factories…

My best regards to Larry and his future endeavors…

Wow Larry would have never thought this. Sorry to see your great RR go. At least you can still run at other layouts and attend steam-ups etc…

Thanks guys…I’ll keep lurking around  Let you know what I wind up doing too.

Sounds like a lull, Larry. Think before you jump, But I understand.

I agree with Ric. Its shame to see great railroads disappear. I remember when The Daisy Beach RR got torn up. It was sad to see it go. http://home.cogeco.ca/~daisybeach/

Larry,
Start or form a club, you will be surprised at the amount of people interested. It worked for me.

Nico

I’m in a club Nick…but not a lot of folks near me.
Daisy Beach…yes, that was a sweet RR…what happened to him?

I join the others here in expressing sadness… and I agree with Ric as well - go slow here; I suspect we all have our ups and downs in enthusiasm - I know I have gone through a few non-railroading periods in my life.

I know the joys of building AND also of operating - been in both camps, love both.

I also get that it’s way more fun to play trains with other boys.

Luckily I have two clubs to recruit fellow operators from, or I might feel the same as you, Larry.

One last thing, if I may: I haven’t seen your layout, but I can say for sure that point to point operations has it all over roundy-roundies. Is your pike primarily the weaker type of format? If so, you might consider converting it, or part of it, to a freightyard or an industrial switching area - not now, perhaps, but in a few months, maybe next Spring. A simple Inglenook can bring operating pleasure to a single guy; you can also share it, and there are interesting ways to extend it. So can an industrial setup for Blindingly Obvious Car Routing. (You can Google it.)

This will always be the world’s greatest hobby, Larry, with the world’s greatest guys in it, like us, fr’instance, and maybe after resting from it for awhile you’ll realize you belong right back in this fraternity! I hope so.

Think about it.

It’s both John. 600 foot main line is great for rail fan type stuff. It’s good for live steam there are also two yards and I was working on bldgs for switching. It’s a nice RR. It competes with this: I’m the old guy in the floppy hat, hand on dodger, looking at camera.

I remember Pete (Daisy Beach RR) said just before he ripped up the line that his kids were into sports and his love for hockey took over the RR. Larry what if you really downsized the RR to the Point where it is easy to maintain but yet if you get the urge to run something the layout is their. Sometimes that becomes a big issue. RR are too big and become a chore rather then a hobby.

I’m in the same boat Larry. I’m in a club and have RR friends but the closest person is an hour and a half away. Last year I ran once. I build alot though and really enjoy it so I just keep adding and adding to my layout.

Heehee! Try moving to Port Orford. You sure learn how to do a lot of stuff all alone when you live in a place where people say..."where the hail is that?" Had some real fun though. Some great guys that love to operate (mostly from the east) have been here over the years. Got a couple of 'em there and up in Canada that haven't been by I'd like to meet in person some day yet too.

Sorry to see you leave the hobby entirely. I really admire your work and have enjoyed your posts very much. But…best wishes on whatever endeavors you embark on.

Larry sorry to hear about your decission. I am in Lunenburg ma. not to many around me either. Loved seeing the pictures of your layout. Good luck.
