Large Scale Central

Gettin' Jiggy Wit It

So with the influx of new folks seems to have brought about a resurgence in interest in hand laying track. ( I think its cause we’re cheap) Having been a handlayer since Day one in Large Scale some 15 odd years I’m guessing, Even I am re evaluating my tools and techniques, thus a brand new jig for building switches on the bench. Inspired by a design Bob brought to York, and with input from hisself I have designed and started construction on thus:

Basically a scrap piece of 1x12 shelving (Mom wanted the shelf out of her guestroom…and since it was my bedroom about 25 years ago when I built the blood thing it was too large to come out in one piece, thats why its painted) I milled out spacers 3/8 x 5/8 x 4" and nailed them on spaced to hold my standard 3/8" square tie snugly. The plan is to build No4s starting at one end, and No6 from the other. I’m planning to use miniature wood screws to hold rails in place while they’re spiked in, and will have to build one of each (a L&R No4 and No6) before the jig will be complete

Gee, another good idea I’ll have to steal from ya…

Well bart now that you have made the jig no point in me having to build my own. how long untill I can place my order?

Order one? Maybe you can borrow it!

HEhehehe ya can’t afford me! So as progress progresses…Here is a shot of the jig with ties in it the straight rail is spiked in place and the diverging rail is screwed down to the spacers with minature wood screws for spiking…

Here is the basically completed switch (Im doing the points and groundthrows out of the jig) still scred into the jig…

You can see the blocks I added in order to be able to screw down the diverging rail…

And finally a completed No4 RH turnout out of the jig…

How did we ever do this before the Spiker?

Is that a pre-cast frog? I ordered 3 different sized frogs from C&OC (4, 6 and 8) and cast a bunch out of resin. Sure cut the time down when building them.

Yep cast a half dozen or so yesterday…

Pre-made frogs is cheating

That really worked out nice Bart. Looks like a great way to build a switch. You just need to be careful to only spike to the ties, not the jig.

amazing work Bart!

Thats the motto that Bob and I have operated on for years…“Cheat to Win”! and since the jig is painted and the ties are not…its not too much of a problem…

Looks like it’s coming along Bart. Seems to work well. Now to look up that article for how many ties of each length and print out the guide sheets. got the wood cut

Nice. I love the way real wood looks as ties.
