… for my future civil war railroad…

Forget if I’d mentioned this outfit before. Was in it in late 1990s early 2000s but then finalized a long and slow move from 1800s HO to contemporary On30

Group Description

This is a group for individuals interested in the history & modeling of American Civil War Rail Roads. Though we cover the ante-bellum period though the end of Reconstruction, our focus is American railroads from 1860 through 1865. Sample topics include the U.S.M.R.R., the W&A, the O&A, the B&O., sharing model & layout photos, souces of modeling supplies, & archival resources. We are proud of our ever expanding bibliography of primary & secondary souces on railroads in the Civil War. Our goals are (1) to help preserve & disseminate Civil War railroad history and (2) to be an aid to individuals modeling the railroads and railway systems of this period. Group discussions & sharing are encouraged. If you wish to join, Yahoo will automatically email you a copy of our Membership Agreement. To join you must respond through the yahoo system specifically stating that, yes, you accept all the terms of the Agreement. We also run a 2nd site (Civil War Railroad Pix) for our overflow photo archives.
Thank you,

Yes i checked it out… it looks cool, but it is by email when stuff is posted, not like a forum as this is. Thank You tho Forrest. I still signed up for it…

There’s also an Early Rail group which began in 1999. (Civil War RRs didn’t start until after that, I think, okay, maybe early 2000s I was in it. Am still in early rail.) Two popular topics this week have been locomotives with crank axles on drivers, 1830s railroading, and this, for example, “In the 1870’s thru the 1890’s, what would be the chances of a Western railroad’s cars, such as UP or D&RG wandering into the Northeast part of the US, say, New England?” https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/EarlyRail/info

Hey Travis;

Several photos of newly re-re-rehabbed W&A Texas on railpictures dot net today.

One, http://www.railpictures.net/photo/614726/

Western & Atlantic Railroad #12, the “Texas”, is displayed on the turntable at NCTM’s Bob Julian Roundhouse in Spencer, NC. The Texas is the headliner at the museum during this weekend’s “100 Years of Steam” event.

Well I have managed to get a few small things done for my car. It took some time and patience as I am still not allowed to use right arm for much of anything. I also managed to get the flooring cut out using some scrap walnut. The end beams are shaped, also walnut. The underframe is somewhat done. Will add truss rods toward end of build, as they would be in the way. I am thinking of doing the whole interior including seats, stove, wood finish, and stuff like that. It won’t measure up to some scratch built coaches i’ve seen, but oh well, it’s mine (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif). I am debating on making door open or not. I like things to function. windows will not, haven’t perfected that yet…lol. So enough rambling. Time for pics…

Will start with the floor and under body. pretty simple looking will add details at the end of build. This car will have link and pin. So I need to see what goes underneath too as far as brake type stuff…

Top of chassis showing flooring (walnut 3/16 x 1/16 ) and the plywood frame floor. The end beams are at each end, also walnut.

Next…Window master for resin cast mold made from styrene…

I made a hair too wide so the lines show how much I needed to sand off…

Gaps filled and sanded. I will add some “glass” to these when completed before installation. I have some thin stuff from some toy packaging at last christmas to use. Should work…

Here is my door this took me most of the day to get it right. Sanding, cutting, fitting, and glueing is pretty frustrating left handed and using one hand. I am right handed too. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif). So after about 5 hrs on this door I finally finished it!..Here it is tested for fit. It is thick enough to make it swing open/shut if I do decide to that route…

The door I think looks better with the raised panels. The plans did not call for it , but it needed something to break it up. It will also have "glass"added along with door knob details…

The plans that I am using ( Garden Railroad insert ) is a generic coach. I am trying to get as close as possible to a 1860-70’s short coach. So that being said, What else can bee added to the end platforms besides railing and hand brake. I was thinking maybe a lantern.

The window I’m not sure if I am satisfied with it. It looks like it is missing something.

More to come…Thanks for Looking…

Looking good so far. You are giving me the motivation to try and make a coach but a little more backwoods. http://www.on30ima.com/

But I will have to make something like yours for my civil war stuff as well.

No automatic alt text available.

That saying where there’s a will there’s a way comes to mind; plenty of will here, cool! Yep, raised panels add to it.

Looking good Travis.

The window isn’t missing anything. It will be inset and get a watertable/sill under it making it look complete. (look at the pic Shawn posted). I would do an inset lower sash though making them look like they open. Just my personal taste.

Travis

I did kitbash a few years ago and I realize it isn’t what you are doing but may give you some ideas as to the era you are after. The prototype car still survives at the PRR Museum.

I love history !

Rooster, you did a awesome job on that car. I assume it took two car kits? which ones did you use from the bachmann kits?. I like the colors too. What shade of yellow was the body? It reminds me of the yellowish color used during the 1800’s passenger coaches on the Western & Atlantic which is what my "generic: coach is for… As said before …Job well done!..

Travis …send me a PM so I don’t forget about the colors. I will have to go out to my shop and look.

That yellow was a common color with the eastern RR’s during that time period. Sherwin Williams Downing Straw comes to mind. Color is a tricky bitch to play with. I have a love hate relationship with it. However I will say that back in that period they knew how to play with it well (kinda like Boomer does with his…never mind )

Just pm me so I can remember to look.

Wow Travis (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)Not sure how I missed this thread. Was the scale you are building these in already mentioned? Looking really good.

1 / 24 scale …I have some updated pics later to add. I have one set of windows cast and both doors. Wife cut my siding for me, since i am limited to one hand right now things are progressing quite slooooooow…

Travis

The Northern Central used the same yellow as the Cumberland Valley. They also interchanged at Harrisburg Pa (back in the day in the hood)

BTW as you asked about the combo car. It was a Bachmann JS coach and Combine bash.

I cannot promise you that the colors are the same but I can assure you that they are VERY close from my research.

Keep up the good work as I’m enjoying it myself!

Latest on my coach project…

This is moving along at a snail’s pace. My wife cut my siding for me tonite. The previous stuff I had cut was too narrow, so new was milled tonite. As for the interior on the one, I think I gonna hold off on it since I am pretty much down to using one paw… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif). So… The siding has been started. I am trying something different. I started by adding the two pieces in between each window and then filling in the middles.

i did this on each side beginning from same end. There will be some sanding to remove a little off the boards around windows. I tried to start from one end and go across, but with all the extra cutting and fitting needed it wasn’t going to happen. So hopefully this will work, besides this is a “experimental car”…(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). siding is cut from cedar strips. This makes it easier to sand where needed around the window openings.

The letter boards will be added after the siding is on. Stack of fresh milled cedar siding awaits the crew to put on…

Thanks for looking… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I think there’s a prototype for this coach. I visited the Georgia RR museum in Savannah and found they have a similar coach. When I asked where they got it, the anewer was that it was built on a flatcar to fit the turntable along with the little diesel. I have a photo somewhere.

Pete if you find the photos could you post them please? Would really appreciate it…

Thanks, Travis

I found one, http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/55256394.jpg

Will look for more.

Angle view showing flat car side sill; and a bit of interior colors through doorless end.

Those are probably as good as my pics. (Didn’t see the 0-4-0 when I was there. )

Ya just gotta have a feel for how to massage Google the right way.
