I have just purchased my retirement house with 2 conjoined sheds one 6Metre x 7.5Metre and the other 6Metre x4.5Metre. 1M=approx. 3.3 Foot
Original plan was to build a layout in the garden (raise about 1-1.5M above the ground to save the knees.
The sheds now shed (no pun intended) a new light on whether to go outdoors subject to weather or all weather indoors.
I am looking for inspiration on indoor layouts so am asking the group to help.
Any suggestion welcome.
Hi Graeme why not do both, layout in the shed connected to an outdoor layout. Best of both worlds.

as i wrote on the other side already, do it! you can go on modeling indoors, when outdoors has become way too uncomfortable already.

Sounds like a lot of potential. Using smaller power and rolling stock, and R1 curves and switches would maximize the possibilities. Depending on the relative locations of the sheds, two indoor terminals with an with an exterior connection. The larger shed might be an interchange with the smaller shed being the point of delivery with multiple industries at both ends.

Bob, that’s an idea. And maybe at some future point add an intermediate terminal or junction on the outdoor connection route for days when it is grand to be outdoors.

With a minimum width of 4.5m (over 14’) he doesn’t need to use R1s.
I’m in agreement with the concept of two small indoor layouts connected by an outdoor link. A “dogbone” would give you continuous running for visitors and some neat possibilities in each shed. Depends of course how far apart they are!
Pete, you missed the qualifying part of my comment, “… would maximize the possibilities”. Following Gramme’s other posts I thought this an appropriate comment. I made no suggestion as to layout to dodge the great operations vs roundly round debate.

The 2 sheds share a common wall that has been removed so are effectively one big shed
The larger is a total blank canvas so I can put anything in there.
The smaller has a mezzanine for storage with a head clearance for me of about 6-9", it has a divider down the centre for about half the length. These have been designated clean and dirty work areas clean being my electronics the dirty being the drill press grinder etc area.
If I can ever clear out my garage again I can get back to work on this, track is down but its covered by boxes currently. Gotham Harbor switching layout

Vic. all you need to clear out that garage is a free weekend, a dumpster or two, and an I don’t care attitude toward the stuff. My BIL did this twice while moving. And, re the OP. I like the outdoor connection idea. Don’t know if you get winter weather there, but if you want to make it all weather, there could be a removable snow shed (rain cover) over the outdoor bench. Now I wish I had some sheds (and a big wood stove to put in it).

Problem is its not MY stuff filling the garage, its SWMBO and who’s stuff cannot be tossed without igniting WW3. I spent the holidays laying pavers behind the garage with the expectation that I will install a line of storage sheds to move the boxes into. Other larger stuff will have to be Ebayed or Craiglisted, but I have said enough is enough, I want my garage back.

I go to the house while a pre sale building inspection is being done tomorrow so more spying will take place to check out layout options (last chance to spy for a year).

I am going to have both. But if I had the space there is no question I would build indoors. There is only a very small interest for me in the garden aspect of garden railroads. I will have some greenery but not a heck of a lot. I just like the big trains for the detail that can be put into them. I saw G scale while into N scale and had size envy. Inside is clean, dry, climate controlled, and will allow you to model G scale like it is HO or N. But thats what I like to do. It would be much harder (not impossible) to bring the garden indoors if you want real plants on your layout. But if i could combine the two as many have, where part of a continious layout is indoors and outdoors that would be wicked awesome.

Another consideration Graeme is how you model. You are an excellent modeler who has a brilliant eye for detail. I think you could do great things indoors where weather wouldn’t kill your stuff.
I started indoors with a dog bone loop and yards that filled my basement. I expanded outdoors while reducing the indoor layout to one balloon track and yard. More recently I put outdoor expansion on hold and expanded indoors to allow more switching. I can honestly say that I run more trains indoors than out.

EDIT to say: Strange - I thought that was the right thread, but there are a ton of pictures on-line that are not there. Probably another thread. I will look deeper later.
