Full Dress on the Triple O for the Holidays

Aloha,

Today, we held one of our periodic “Little People on the Railroad Day,” when my old collection of Wild West PLAYMOBIL comes out and a 1:24-ish scale world in the mode of Karl Mai’s “Winnetou” comes into being. Of course, there might be some pirates and fairies and dragons and whatever, but, you get the idea. We take a bunch of pictures, but I am still evaluating them, both for their artistic merit and for their value as boy-I’ve-got-to-fix-that! Instead, let me try linking to the video we tried. We mounted our camera inside a coach (Look familiar, Rooster?), and let it roll. The sound effects are…yeah…turn down the speakers…

Anyway, enjoy:

And may I wish all those who celebrate either Happy Hanukkah or Merry Christmas!

Tim,

Sorry. I am having trouble embedding / linking to videos from OneDrive. If I embed them, they automatically start when you open the blog page. Hyperlinking may not be a solution, either. Sorry.

Eric

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year, Eric.

I can state equivocally, that I’ve never seen a model railroad video from that point of view. Fascinating. BZ

Steve,

Thanks. Oldest Daughter had been experimenting with the concept, lining up still shots up through a window and shooting across the interior and out the opposite side…

…as well as through the coach as if you were boarding…

We have also been experimenting more generally with getting a PLAYMOBIL dude’s-eye-view of the railroad in our snapshots based upon some tips in GR and elsewhere. As fate would have it, a “care” package from “Rooster” with some parts to finish up another project included a lot parts in the form of a coach (She is working out how she plans to detail and paint this, knowing she will set what will become the Triple O’s w color scheme and logo. We promise to document the effort, but we are waiting for the Mik before proceeding.) with an easily removed roof that provided a ready platform. The handheld camera easily lodged in the aisle between the seats, so it was just a matter of her peering through the view screen to get the “passenger’s view” that she wanted. I am sure with a more sophisticated micro-camera, this could be readily replicated.

I was surprised how viewing thing from the “scale view” both hid and revealed “faults” in our layout, and in about equal measure, relative to where we want to be and where we would like to go. Anyway, I am glad to be surrounded by some pretty creative brains around this house!

Eric;

John Allen, the Grand Master of model railroading until his death in 1973, was a professional photographer. He would frequently photograph projects and new modeling efforts on his HO Gorre & Daphetid Railroad to see where improvements were needed or how to make things seem more realistic. The technique is very helpful. John was also playful and had a good sense of humor. He made a little stegosaurus from wax, fitted her with a bridle and harness, named her Emma, and set her to work loading and unloading heavy items from freight cars.

I have a work triceratops in large scale named Trish, who also has reins and a harness. Trish is my silent tribute to John Allen and his Gorre & Daphetid RR.

Best wishes, David Meashey
