Frustration... track power and a big hauler

Quote from a Lehmann PDF document in relation to onboard decoders, dated, September 25, 2002 -

“Digital is the future of model railroading,” said Rolf Richter, Managing Partner at Lehmann, “and we are
committed to giving our customers the advantages of digital operation with the same simplicity, reliability
and value they expect from LGB trains.”

I wonder where the future will be heading now?

Tim,

Sound like a good “goals & mission statement” to me… Should work today for any train manufacturer…

Bob,

“Sound and effect” didn’t quite match in that case. There were/are enough people who objected to having to pay for something they would dispose of, since it was of inferior useability. But honestly, how was RR supposed to know that, eh? He would have heard it loud and clear, if he would have listened. What’s that? Listened?

Kevin, a big difference between our connections and those of a professional installation as you refer to is that most of that is somewhat protected from the elements, whereas a lot of ours is out in the open, uninsulated, uncovered, soaked in rain, buried under snow, stomped on, pooped on, coffee, coke, bheer spilt on and an ungodly number of other contaminants it's subjected to. Higher amperages at higher voltages can burn through a lot of corrosion whereas our low amperage, low voltage will not. Add to that locomotives with poorly designed electrical contacts/pickups and it's a miracle that some of these even run.

Warren,

You forgot to add that some of the connections made by GRRs are a bit suspect in the first place, check any of the fora for how people solder feeder wires to rail and you will know what I mean. The stuff you mention is mostly consequential hinderances piled on a job that wasn’t up to snuff in the first place.

My connections suspect? Perish da tot. I can get youse anyting youse wants.

Oh, waitaminit. Youse is talkin about those kinda connections. Mine are probably worse than anybodies. :stuck_out_tongue:

I once went to Radio Shack to get some electrical continuity grease. I was given some di-electric grease.

I didn’t use it because the directions said it had insulating powers.

Go figure…

Radio Shack in Spokane is about worthless when it comes to electronics parts…and our one and only electronics parts supplier in Spokane no longer serves the general public but has gone wholesale only. When I asked them for the name of a local retail electronics supplier they could not name one.

Pardon my general f*up with the conductive paste. Typed what I was thinking, not what I meant to type. I use the LGB paste, which is conductive. Steve, go see Jim. He may still have some.

Well given all the input …… I opened up the first Big Hauler today and “Low and Behold”… the pilot truck power feeds were cooked…. That is to say melted …… that is to say way to much voltage!!!

Did check the motor out, it is still functioning ….haven’t been able to look at anything else however since tropical storm “Erin” (my 6 year old granddaughter’s name and a similar storm) has identified a roof leak over the breakfast table for us this morning. (there goes the Shay….) You would think that some of this stuff would be obvious to the most casual observer……(which apparently I am one)…. But as my old man used to say …“most good judgement is developed from the experience of years of bad judgement and I’m living proof!!!” Guess I’ll break down the second one sometime this weekend and see what horrors I’ve created there…… or call Barry’s…. or order the Shay….or the Rodgers… and the Forney…….and the Rodgers…… or just have a little bourbon …or maybe a lot of bourbon…no…tequila …yeah, that’s the ticket…tequila shots!!! Now what was that about good judgement??? Mark

Mark:

Take a look at my latest reply to your corresponding thread over on MLS. Hope that helps.

Given that we got 7+ inches of rain over about 36 hours…

That’s the road from my house down to the river… about 1000 feet from the river…I’ll be a little preoccupied for the next week or two rebuilding about 1000 feet of fence and cleariing and resetting about 200 feet of water gaps. Don’t take my absence as any thing other than Mother nature is a Mother and we are all at her mercy… so… I guess there will not be a new shay in the offing any time soon… fenceMaterial at $1.90/ft …times…800+ or -… nope not any time soon… Work to be done… as soon as it dries out… hope “Dean” doesn’t land here next week… may be I can find the mescal… lots of mescal… where’s the worm… Mark
