Whoever wrote the contemporary captions wasn’t paying attention. Each photo of a stamp mill has the original caption ON the photo describing it as a stamp mill (and/or gold mill). Yet the modern caption below the photos calls them “sawmills”.

Likely didn’t know what a stamp mill is and tried to interpret for us modern folk.
