From Toy Train to Model Train

I bought an old battery toy train set a couple years ago off Ebay called a Big Bird Express, which featured a cheepie battery powered engine, two ore care and 3 plastic Sesame Street charecters riding in them, I repainted the ore cars but the engine remained a tough one to figure what to do with it so it sat around in a box for the last 2 years until I thought about doing one more Mack bash with the last remaining spare chassis I had. I figured an open cab locomotive would be the best doable bash for this lokie.

A litttle testing revealed it was a perfect fit, …and away we go!

Cab cut and trimmed, interior begun,

Cab almost complete

Profile

Test figure added Painting underway right now, just basic black. Still a few little trim bits to add… Anyone interested in the Sesame Street figures?

I guess that means the yellow lettering is going?

This should be interesting!

Looks like it would make a neat little yard switcher…

Nice work on all the backhead detail. Jerry

That’s got feldbahn written all over it!

Came out pretty well, the cab interior looks much better painted, all thats left is a little light weathering.

great job. always nice to see the creativity come out in people.

(They found Casey Jones with his hand on the throttle …)

Howdy. I haven’t been here in a while; just getting back into the hobby again. Here’s a photo of 20 of the little ore cars Victor was referring to. I’ve been collecting them from various sources(ebay, thrift stores, other model railroaders) for about 8 yrs now.

JEALOUZ, JEALOUZ WE IZ, We WANTZ the PRECIOUS ! Seriously, I am jealous!

Vic (& Rene),
I collected a LOT of those little cars back 7 years ago now. Repainted them, applied Gold and silver Decals made by Ricky Rupp at Modern Rails and used them for center pieces at our wedding. Stuffed a small teddy bear in them and they worked great! I’ve still got a bunch left over and a few that were taken then have even been returned! I’ve found three sources besides LGB/Lehman. The first being a small battery operated set called Mighty Casey. The loco in that set was a direct copy of the LGB puffing billy loco and the cars came molded in at least three colors came with a was to run on plastic track.
The next set is the Big Bird Express as shown With Big Bird pulling two empty cars if I recall? This also came with plastic track.
The next was an Elmo train with Oscar and the Cookie Monster riding in the cars and came without track. The loco had rubberized wheels on it and was a floor runner.

I too have a lot of the locos left over and some of the Oscars and Cookie Monsters if anyone is interested in them?

Chas

P.S. Vic, I thought of maybe making a kid proof Dunkirk out of one? A couple of 44 tonner motor blocks or other small motor blocks and some scratch built side frames on a bachman flat car?

Hey I called dibs on those!

I’m next in the ore car buffet line after Cale…

Chas, I broke the wheel off one of those drive brick by accidentally dropping it so they are not kid proof, had better luck with the HLW Mack drives being a bit more durable.

My Big Bird Express had the two figures in the ore cars, and I had one of those Mighty Caseys also but I’ve lost track of it. I’ve seen these ore cars go for some pretty lony prices recently, everyone is LGB wwithdrawal freefall and are going crazy with prices. been real tempted to just build my own out of styrene, they look pretty easy, maybe I’ll try one and post some pics.
