From Coal Fired to Oil

Working on the Ft. Worth & South-Western RR I got to thinking why do I have coal fired engines when there was probably never a coal fired engine within 300 miles of Ft. Worth. All of Ft. Worth eight major railroads back in the day were all Oil Fired. I removed the coal loads that I made with the engines re-due from the tenders and built oil bunkers that went in place of the coal loads, worked out very well and I’m happy with the results. Now I can run with the big eight major railroads, I guess the coal tower will just go by the wayside and oil storage facilities will be needed, another project.

Well done on the bunkers, John. They look very nice!

What thickness styrene did you use for the build? Looks like you used a foam base inside? Was that for structural support or to improve quality of a sound system in the tender?

I used foam board, not the white soft stuff that is used in packing, this foam board is easy to sand and work with. I cut it to size with my hot wire and them sanded it to the size I wanted just a little smaller so when I glued the 1/16" styrene to the sides and top it was a nice fit into the tender. The LGB tender has two levels of plastic between the coal/wood loads and the area where the electronic tender weight, and spk would go. So the foam that I used was just for filling the space where I cut the top plastic out and it rest on the second shelf in the tender. Don’t know if this will help with sound quality, or not, haven’t installed sound yet. For me it was much easier to cut and sand a foam block to size, rather them built it out of styrene and hope it fits, then have to work the styrene to fit the space needed.

Right on, thanks for the info and nicely done.
