Friends in the NorthWest

Seeing the reports that Seattle and surrounding area really got beat up over the last couple of days with high winds and nasty weather. Anybody hearing from Dave Goodson and some of the other guys in that part of the World? Power outages and trees down, lots of garden railroads up there, I hope the damage wasn’t too bad.

Everybody here in Spokane seems to be ok. Nothing really major to report…at least among the LSers here. My house came out without any damage, but the south facing part of the roof of my 4plex will have to be replaced. The winds ripped off most of the roofing. I should be ok in the short run though as there is another layer of shingles underneath that looks to be intact. I’ll wait until March and have the thing redone.

I believe that Richard Smith came out ok. He was in chat Friday night…as well as HJ. Steve Featherkile has been here on line and I will assume there is nothing major there. At least he has electricity and a roof over his head. He’s not said anything about major damage. So far TOC seems to be the only one MIA. I’ve not heard one way or the other about Dave Winter (MLS) so don’t know there. He lives up by HJ.

I got the following email friday from Barry (BBT) about Dave:

—paste—

Dave has asked me to let everyone know his situation in the Seattle area. The power is out. His phone is not working due to it’s routing through his computer.

He can hear cars’ horns honking and tires squealing…no traffic lights.

He hopes the power outage will be over soon. Tonight is a train operations night…and they are operating through the miracle of battery power.

Merry Christmas!

Two big cedars came down across the street from me. Didn’t hit my neighbors house, just took out the power and cable lines.
My two big spruces stood up during the 70mph gusts, thank God. They would have crushed my house.
All our yards are littered with branches.

Hello fron the great dark northwest. Went to the lights to do laundry today so thought I woud pay the high price to surf the net. 10 cents a min.

Was over at Dave Goodsons friday and he is doing well on emergency gen power for lights and refrig. little damage to the RR mostly buildings.

The No Name and Never Done however sustained significant damage when large branches of large trees decided to become one with the track and buildings.

Will send pictures if we ever get power, phone, ect back (estimate 5 more days). hope all have a good Christmas. we are slowly returning to normal. Good news is the power is only 6 miles away from my house now and getting closser every day.

No Name and Never Done

Thank you for the reports, hope everyone stays safe. Just slow and easy and let the people that need to get the work done, get it done in a safe manner.

To all NW friends,
It is great to hear that most of you came through the storm with minimal damage. There have been 90mph winds in Wichiat a year and a half ago, so we understand how scarry it can be. Please check in with us as you are able. We care.
JimC.

I’m glad to hear that everyone is ok and that damage has been minimal. Hope you’ll have power again soon.

45 minutes ago power back.
They tell us to expect more outtages as they power up new areas.
Juanita drive looks like a war zone and is still dark.

Couple of buildings, wind damage, fixed by candle light…

Ran trains the whole time.

Gotta love that battery r/c stuff.

Hi Dave,

Glad to hear you’re OK! That R/C stuff is really neat as long as there’s no largish branches falling on your noggin’ while running trains.

Deer Park came through just fine. I found somebodys blue foam boards in my yard. I don’t know where they flew in from, but I’m sure I can put them to good use on the O-gauge pie in the basement. It is bitter cold, which tends to cause an increase in accidents on the Purple Heart Highway (US 395) as the Yahoos try to cope with black ice. Otherwise, just another winter day.

Finaly have internet back. Probably gonna loose it again when the pull my large tree down that is accross the cable trunk line. Power came back sunday night. and Dave… did anyone besides me show up friday??? I did get to run my new mallet for a while.

Off to check 300 e-mails

Power finally came back on early this past Saturday morning. Were without power for 9 days. We went ahead an held our annual holiday open house with no power. Lots of people were coming to see the trains run. Don’t know what possessed me, but Wednesday night before the storm hit on Thursday I charged up my only battery powered loco (Bachmann Climax). I was able to run the trian for approx 4 hours which pleased everyone that attended.
