GN SD7 558 and GN passenger GP9 have been freshly washed and await their next assignment at Superior, Wis. in the final summer of Great Northern’s existence. Most of GN’s SD7 and SD9 fleet spent their careers in the Duluth-Superior area supporting iron ore operations on the Mesabi Range, as well as in general freight service in the area. GN 680, along with GN 679 were the railroad’s only two passenger GP9s, and were often used in the area as back-up power to support Badger/Gopher passenger service as well as general freight service.
