Large Scale Central

Freelance 'baby' derrick

Built entirely from the spares box and based on Bachmann centre cupola caboose leftover parts, is this baby derrick, intended for a very narrow, narrow gauge. Idler flatcar will also be built from leftover caboose parts. Still need to convince the local ‘hobby’ store to stock some piano wire to complete the support rods and trussrods. mocked up at present to get a feel for it.

Tim,
Great progress.
I will be using brass rod on mine.
Piano wire is too stiff to work with.
Also try brazing rod from a welding supplier.

Tim - if you have one of the large ACE Hardware stores around, they usually carry piano wire and also K&S shapes. I go there when the local Hobby shop is out of the size I need for some project.

Do they have ACE’s down under?

Maybe Bunnings then?

John,
brass rod is my first choice, but my local hobby store does not usually sell anything that does not use radio control, so obtaining basic supplies is very difficult. We do have Bunnings as a major hardware supplier, but no ACE stores.

Tim,
A unique concept nicely executed.
Looks very good.
Rick

A little more progress. Winch engine to build (eventually). Flatcar next on the list.

Tim,
It looks very convincing. Did you make the pulleys? Hmm another inspirational project to put on the list.
Dave

Dave,
the brass pulleys are a product from the Spanish company, Artesania(?), known for their model ships and trams. I did purchase them around 25 years ago in my model boat building phase, so do not know if they are still produced. Like everything else, they were sitting in my spares/junk box awaiting the right project.

great looking crane, tim…

Andy, many thanks. Flatcar commenced. I would have very much preferred a timber deck, however, having built several flatcars using the Bachmann caboose underframe, coupled with a timber deck, I have on every occasion suffered from severe sagging of the deck, weeks to months later. Even after rebuilding the deck by straightening and reinforcing, the deck eventually sags over time. I have given up on planking these mouldings. I need to source more stirrup steps to finish the car.

Really nice!

Good looking build Tim.

Thanks fellas. It did put a small dent in my spares /junk box, however, at times I could wish for a deeper box to finish off these ‘spares’ projects.
