Found - track leveling tool at Harbor Freight

Harbor Freight has this level for sale for $5.97 ea. It is much easier to read than a bubble level. As seen in the photo, the bottom edge is magnitized.

Here, the level is used on reconstructive track work. JimC. P.S. Don’t think I’ll post this over on the Aristo Forum.

Looks nice. The main contribution of the Aristo track gauge, in my opinion, is the gauge that does many measurements. The levelling vials are approximate at best. Since they are held in with hot glue, leaving it in the sun in a hot place will probably not be a good thing.

Now, looks like your gauge is in degrees, we need a simple conversion to % and we’d be in gravy.

Have you thought of how to make it read in the other direction? I guess attach to a flat car. Put a metal plate on the flat car, and the base would let you turn it 90 degrees easily.

Regards, Greg

To mount it the other way, all you would need would be a 3in. by 2in. piece of ferous metal plate. The magnet and dial could then be rotated 90 degrees. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=34214 From Harbor Freight’s web page: “Check angles from 0 to 90° in seconds. Accurate to 1/2°. No fooling around with clumsy protractors and manual angle finders- indicator points right to the number. Magnetically attaches to a square; can be mounted to non-metallic squares with self-threading screws (sold separately). Includes conversion chart for determining pitch per inch and foot. ITEM 34214-2VGA” $5.99ea.

I made my own out of 4 line levels and a 3/4 piece of plywood. The levels are marked at 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% grade. The The gizmo will fit atop a flatcar…

1% = .5729 degree

just though you might want to know!!!

Been using that tool for 2 years now and it is GREAT. Regarding the metal plate to rotate the tool 90 degrees, all I did was get a 4 inch blank electrical box cover and it works real well.
Good luck,
Ron

Been using one of these critters for over a decade now for setting the elevation angle on satellite dishes, both big and small!

Since the internal pivot bearing tends to gum up a bit after a few of years, I buy a brand new one if I’m going to calibrate a dish position controller by it’s readings.

Track leveler? That’s a new one, but I’m not surprised in the least. These things are REALLY handy for a lot of jobs.

In a few weeks I expect to be pulling out one to check / adjust the sidecar attachments on my motorcycle.

BTW… why would you need a plate to rotate it 90 degrees? There are attachment magnets on TWO fases of the gizmo’s body, precisely 90 degrees apart!

Mr. T.

gosh I need one to calculate the Grade of Death on the NBRR!

Thanks Pres. Carter
