Forums, Manners and .........Adults????

To echo Bob’s comment, 'It didn’t take long…" I seems that there are those folks who never learn, or are too full of self to pay attention. Another thread locked that Bob had to play ‘hall monitor’ to. I don’t visit here to put up with that sort of stuff.

My suggestion to Bob to make his life a bit easier is, and these happen with NO WARNING!!.

First offence - suspend account for 30 days

Second offence - suspend account for 60 days

Last offence - permanent banned, no option.

Maybe after a few suspensions without warning it migh sink in. I am sorry to say I beleive it is time for our Benevolent Dictator to be a little less Benevolent and more like a dictator.

I won’t roll-up the whole litany, let me put it the simple way. As a rule I consider a thread as a means for discussion, posts that have one emoticon with no further contribution are superfluous. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

PS My suggestion regarding the minimum requirement in a post is not just another kick at that same can, if it works in the phpBB I’m reasonably certain it could be implemented in this software.

HJ - you need to let it go. This is from one freind to another. There won’t be a winner in this battle - just loosers - all of us.

Let it go, HJ…

Consider it gone!

“LET IT GO” My grandaughter knows the whole movie backward and forward. Performs every song and dances to them with all the moves while she sings them. Four years old.

Dan,

I take it she performs tunes from Disney’s “Frozen”?

Vic, you know that “I guarantee it” guy got fired by the company he founded? He was NOT happy about it!

Didn’t I say somewhere that (my opinion) starting/opening a thread about a locked topic is a bad idea?

Do I get to say I told you so? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Yeah I remember that, it was pretty harsh the way he was treated

Well here is how I see it. I might be slitting my own throat but the original original post was benign. It was not train related and as such I understand why it was locked; but was not really provocative . I believe the OP of the next thread Dan honestly was just questioning why he couldn’t post to it, not realizing what locked meant ( I didn’t orginally, until Bob locked mine upon my request). From there this spiraled into a nightare to which I unitentionally added to. Which in hind sight I should have kept my cyber mouth shut. From there I got a negative rep and made yet another stupid comment about why I got it. from there we went into an abyss. So I don’t blame deiseldude for his post nor Dan for his. I blame all the rest of us that took it from there to where we are now.

I apologize yet again to Bob and the forum for my part in taking this where it went. I can’t say more than I am sorry. Maybe I will learn to keep it about trains 100% and try my damndist to not say anything remotely controversial.

Apparently my original post was not clear enough. Although I referenced the most recent locked thread, my post had nothing to do with that thread specifically. Daktah John seems to be the only person in this thread that fully understood my message, so I will clarify it a bit more.

I am getting real tired of the sniping and back biting between a small hand full of members here who for what ever reason cannon/will not leave each other alone. Or those who no matter with the situation just must have the last word. Case in point, in this thread it took Bob telling someone that it was time to quit, and that person in stead of just walking away, had to have the last word. Just saying nothing would have spoken so much louder than that ‘last word’ comment.

Then we have the ‘I told you so croud’, whose comments do nothing but inflame the situation. Totally unnecessary comment, with no other purpose thatn to instigate more conflict.

Maybe a little history of my perspective is on order. The first forum I found when I returned to model railroading and large scale in particular was the now defunct Large Scale Online. I lived there for two years until I found My Large Scale and Large Scale Centeral. I left LSOL for two reasons. First reason was the very topic of this thread. The second, why pay for the same informaton I can garner for free? Over time I migreated to LSC being my primary place for hobby association. I still visit MLS, but don’t post there very often. Over the course of the last couple of years, LSOL has closed it’s doors and MLS has changed hands, both resulting in folks from those sites relocating here. Some of those folks are the reason I migrated here in the first place.

Please take particular note that I have specifically not mentioned names, the intention is not to throw rocks at anyone, but rather bring a perspective to light in the hopes that these folks can, as has been said before, ‘think before they post’.

I really think we need to better understand the policing system that we now have at our disposal.

We have the ability to grant "reputation points".    These points can be good or bad.   So, if you dislike the tone of a post or where it is heading, it's probably time to grant a negative reputation point to that poster.

As members, it seems we are either not used to this idea or so afraid of getting a point that we don't want to give one out because we might hurt someone's feelings.   So we end up hurting even more feelings because of our inaction.

Let's not get upset because ONE person gave us ONE negative post.   Heck, that just means that one person took exception to your tone, or failed to find the humor in your little joke, or is just not interested in what you're talking about.   ONE person.   This should not be a big deal.

However, if you get more than one today (especially on the same post!) than maybe that's a sign that you should REALLY reconsider what you just posted, and maybe need to tone down your posts in general.

The whole idea is to keep this site up and functioning in a fun and friendly way, but if we don't use the tools we have I suspect that our Benevolent Dictator will just end up pulling the plug permanently.

Bruce has it right. I’m not interested in policing every thread. I only keep an eye on a couple of users due to their history of being, shall we say, un-even in how they post. There is now a system in place where members can help police content and other members behaviour. USE IT.

If you’re thin skinned enough that a random negative reputation point here and there hurts, then maybe you dont belong on ANY online forum. Someone will take offense to anything ANYONE says. Sky is blue… no, its grey today at my place, youre an idiot. I’m tired of fielding emails from members when they end up in a pissing match on the site, and get their feelings hurt. “Do something, Bob!” No, you do something. We’re all adults, put on your big-boy pants and ignore it, or deal with it privately. Continuing to whine and moan publicly only continues to reinforce my belief that I’ve made a giant mistake continuing to run the site. I’m not here to soothe anyones hurt ego. Like Bruce said, if you end up with a random negative reputation point, big deal. If you end up with five because of a certain post, or consistantly end up with negative reputation, look at what the common thread is. Its probably YOU. If you consistently end up in the middle of pissing matches, the common thread IS you. At that point you can do one of two things. Continue to poison the well, or get your head wired straight, calm down, and stop acting like youre in kintergarten and someone took your favorite toy.

Everyone grow up.

Thank you Bob.

On another note should some of you guys be voting for the challenge. I find it intresting that we are missing a lot of votes especially from those that like to post in the controversial topics, hmmmm why is that??? Oh wait its something positive.

You hit the nail on the head, Joe. When my youngest daughter was about seven or eight, “The Little Mermaid” was the biggest thing around. “Frozen” must have surpassed that by mega-millions!

About the spell check. Normally my computer corrects most of my spelling mistakes by alerting me to the error or by actually correcting it. However, I noticed that here, on the forum, it does not intervene. I have an Apple desk top.

From my perspective I find that to vote I should have followed the various building logs and observed how the projects took shape based on the builders’ thought process.

It’s just one of my quirks, I don’t vote unless I’m reasonably well informed on what’s up for a vote. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

I don’t vote because I can’t choose, they are all great!

I usually don’t vote because I was competing.
