Forney makeover

Mmm… forgot about the LGB smoke units. Can’t help you as I have never had an LGB engine, much less taken one apart.

Maybe it looks OK after all

Most hobby shops will have Squadron putty too. Comes in green and white. Both work fine. The green is just a bit finer. No ideas on that smoke unit but I do believe they come out.

He wasn't there Saturday....Ric had the back up sharpie! I got his ass signed for him! :) Edit too say Bruce could not work the Sharpie and he scratchbuilds?

Now THAT looks good! Congratulations! I particularly like the way the rods have been toned down.

…and nothing looks so much like real coal as real coal

Dont forget I brought that hot pink mini skirt you wanted. LOL

Bart next year I plan on staying for the two days so hopefully I will meet everyone I did not get to meet this year. If anyone is ever up in my area stop on by.

Tac Its amazing what a little paint and extra details do to an engine. Once you start with this stuff its hard to stop LOL The first time kitbashing a new engine it hurt but once I saw the results its was well worth it.

Masterfully done Shawn! You’ve got a real lil’ workhorse there now. I like your paint job very much too.

The Forney makeover was put on hold for a little because of the nice weather. Now that we are back to more normal temps I started up again. I got the domes done, added some more details (piping, new bell, pole pockets etc…) So far I am happy with it. Still a few little things to add (change the light on roof, add a little more weathering in spots)

Great looking Forney Shanw, very well done.

Shawn,
the rear light on the cab roof is actually, prototypical for S.R.& R.L.R.R. #22, on which the original LGB Forney was based, as was your Pennsy Forney. The domes and stack height were also correct for that model. The LGB model very faithfully copies the original, within reason and is a good model of the prototype. As regards dome height, the earlier Sandy River Forneys, as modelled by Bachmann, do have lower domes and stack and this is correct for the earlier series Forneys purchased by the railroad.

As your railroad is your domain, then light position, dome height etc., are your decision.

Great addition to the pike Shawn. Man you have come along way in a short time

Nice work, Shawn. I like the changes that you have made; I think it’s a better looking loco now and especially suited for your RR. I enjoy comparing the “before” with the after.

The LGB forney is believed to be based…loosly…on the “Eustis Engines”… which were three 2-foot gauge 0-4-4 forneys built by Baldwin for the Eustis railroad in Maine… a logging railroad that was later folded into the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes system… Eustis 7, 8 and 9 then became SR&RL 20, 21 and 22. They arent exact models of the Eustis engines (but nothing LGB does is intended to be an exact scale model anyway)

(just FYI, that LGB paintscheme for their SR&RL #22 isnt remotely prototypically accurate… Im not sure of the as-delievered Eustis paintscheme, but its very well documented that by the time they were repainted for the SR&RL, they were “basic black”…so that LGB scheme is pure whimsey…) Scot

Shawn, your bash is looking great. It gives me a lot of ideas when I get mine.
What did you use for glue? I know that LGB has had it’s trials and tribulations!

LGB = pure whimsy? Say it ain’t so!!!

I like the much-toned-down paint. Definite improvement.

Later,

K

Thanks I use PRO CA Cyanoacrylate glue made by great planes. Its the ultra thick gel slow set. They also have a faster set s well. I got it from my local hobby town. It is great stuff. I have used it on everything with no problems. Even holds up outdoors

Little by little I plan on adding more to the forney

In so far as the LGB #22 Forney colour scheme then think of the colours of the packaging - red and green. LGB also did it with their first release #2018D Mogul. Must have been something in their coffee. I actually read that it was believed that the prototype Mogul actually was red and green (a coincidence, maybe?) - definately something in their coffee! The later release #21 Forney was black.
