If I have to ask the prices, I probably can’t afford it anyway…

Yes, I found the price list as a pdf titled ‘brochure’ under ‘downloads’, but should I REALLY have had to search for it? Do you want to sell your stuff? Consider putting a page up called ‘Price list’, or perhaps even putting the prices with the item descriptions. Also, prices in pounds sterling with shipping to the UK isn’t all that much use to people in the US… just a thought.

Mik,
Beware of things that go bump in the night.

Hi Paul -

Everyone is welcome here, but this For Sale forum and Classifieds are meant for causal transactions, not commercial advertisements. Bob would be happy to sell you a banner ad, or allow you to sponsor a forum. If you buy an ad or sponsor a forum, the general population here would be more accepting of on-topic commercial posts.

There’s nothing wrong with a guy trying to make an honest buck, and lord knows we need more suppliers…

BUT, for someone with all those years supplying to 1:1 railroads, it doesn’t seem to translate very well into being able to design a retail website or having a clue about marketing to hobbyists. They spent all this time, money and energy on slick looking graphics, and made one of the most (IMHO) unforgivable errors by making people hunt for the goddam price list (Two, if you want to count posting huge commercial pitches without at least asking the owners of the sites first - he did a copy n paste of the same message on at least one other forum as well)

But what the hell would I know, it only took me a decade to lose my shirt in the hobby biz

Mik - I agree with one slight exception…

We have several commercial vendors as members here and they all make posts about their products - both new information and helpful tips on using their products. The big difference is that they throw a little bit of their profits back to Bob in the form of ads and sponsorships. It’s these ads that allow free access (and free storage) to this site by everyone.

If we encourage the use of the for-sale forum and classifieds by vendors without requesting that they at least support the site, then we will be over-run by vendors looking for free advertising.

BTW - I think you did good if you lasted 10 years in the hobby business before going bust. I looked at doing it once and figured I’d go bust in less than 5.

I had a thought, I wonder how a sub-forum with ‘new product’ announcements would work? Mayhaps without initial cost to encourage start up vendors, BUT posts only w/ approval? Probably too much work for a moderator, and too little support from the rest.

I generally give a little slack to new advertisers, but if it continues, the hammer will come down. I DID delete the other post shilling for another site.

Hmm…does this sound familiar from a couple years ago to anyone else?

Garrett,
there was a seemingly harmless posting on the general forum, about a week or so, ago about a member asking a question as to the dimensions of largescale buffer stops (track bumpers). He enclosed a photograph of what he had made in other scales. Well, it turns out he is an Indian manufacturer who sells on eBay.

If you had the deja vu feeling with the Indian loco manufacturer, then he did post a year or more ago on the now defunct MAD site. I cannot recall him posting previously on this site.
